This isn't the Olympics. Silver medals count for **** all in tournament football ffs. Show respect to who exactly? UEFA, who made them? I couldn't be more proud of England for making the final but I don't begrudge the players for taking off a second-place medal.
The spirit of the game
Born winners like yourself don’t understand that

Not actually losing a game in 90 minutes or extra time wasn't bad, was it? Only us and Italy could say that. Unless some team drew 3 games and went out.
Of course if we had won on penalties all the sad types who wish their own country would lose would have said how can you celebrate winning that way? And then saying how marvellous the scenes are in Italy as they celebrate,

Italy were the best team in the tournament. We were probably second best.
We've progressed with a young team, it's all a steep learning curve. Will stand them in good stead for the future,
Disagree, they were there for the taking. Played too cautiously, in the second half. No point bringing Rashford and Sancho on to take penalties... Italy tried to win, we tried not to lose...

Did better than I expected I suppose
Least I know who some these players are now

I don't think most expected us to get to the final.

For me, although I didn't know much of him before, a player who impressed me and is an example for younger players to look to was Chiellini. 36, partnering a 34 year old and he was everywhere at the right time, looking fitter than players 10 years and more younger, breaking down attacks and directing those around him.

Second-place is just first loser. To some, taking off their medal looks like arrogance but to me it just looks like disappointment at failure and a desire to be better and win. Why would a team of players who've won Premier Leagues, Champions Leagues, FA Cups, La Ligas etc. be proud of second-place?
Think you will find the majority of those players have not won any of those?

You're never gonna be happy losing, but give these players and manager a break. Let them reflect and theyll know theyre building something that with a tweak or 2, a bit more experience and anyear or two more of the progress they've been making and we could just bring it home from Quatar.

We were worthy finalists. Penalties. A crap shoot. Accept it.
Blame no-one. Almost every post (POST RESULT) appears to be blaming our manager or pen takers.
Which means few understand the game & how to manage one. Hindsight leads to stupid opinions &
pathetic attitudes.

This thread has excelled in this regard.

A disappointing end to the evening, but if we had said at the beginning of the tournament we would be losing finalists, only conceded 2 goals, and be unbeaten in 90 minutes in all the games then I think most would have taken that.

On balance IMO Italy was just the better team, they kept the ball better and looked to win the game, whereby we, after scoring the early goal, looked to sit back and see the game out, which against a good Italian side was not the right thing to do. Maybe we scored too early, and that put us in the wrong mindset for the rest of the game?

Having said all that, we defended on the whole very well and kept them to a minimum of chances, and their goal was a tad fortunate, if Pickford's great save had gone round the post rather than hitting it, then the outcome might have been different.

Rice up to being replaced had a very good game as did the back line. I thought Henderson was poor when he came on and never seemed to get into the game.

Sterling and Kane for the most part were handled well by Italy, apart from the first 15 minutes kept the quiet most of the game.

IMO Southgate should have brought on the likes of Grealish earlier, Mancini kept freshening up his team with substitutes and we IMO left it too late.

Bring on Rashford and Sancho as late as they did and expecting them to then take a penalty was asking too much of them IMO.

Nevertheless, we have been kept entertained for the full tournament for once, so credit to all concerned for getting to the final.

Very disappointing. Better team won, stats weren’t even close and didn’t lie despite our early goal. Southgate hopefully will learn from this.
