I said at the start of the competition if he let them Play we could win, until today he did, today he had them try and sit on a 1 goal lead, should have taken saka off, no excuse when he brought Henderson on and then subbed him, Southgate ****ed up tonight and he knows it
It was a lack of courage and the confidence to take risks ... ... something you just bloody knew the Italians had lots of. Tonight the red was missing from the St George flag under Southgate.
I have only pride aspnd disappointment. Yes I blame Southgate, but to sack the most successful manager since Alf Ramsey would just be ludicrous. Got a theory on the penalty takers. easy to assess and study where “regular” penalty takers go. So Sancho and Saka would likely be unknown to the Italians. Rashford is the one penalty I have issue with. The keeper is massive and a very good penalty keeper. 5 shootouts played, 5 won. Saka and Sancho hit the target. Keeper dives the other way we win. Because he didn’t, they’re poor penalties? they hit one down the middle. Probably not as good a penalty as Saka or Sancho’s, but it went in. Doesn’t make it a better pen. Pickford stands stil, he kicks it away!
I'm sticking my boot in on Southgate but in no way do I think he should go, I'm being critical because I think he could have done better, not because I don't think he had it in him. He has earned his place leading us to the world cup.
I can't agree with the calls for Southgate to go. He did brilliantly to get us to the final imo but the players for the penalties for be need to have a good look at themselves. You can never call any player who takes one (for me Rashford tried to be too clever) but at least he had the balls to take one. I wasn't expecting Maguire to step up and I reckon it was probably the best penalty but for me you need to look at players who put themselves into the spotlight and then don't follow that up, especially in finals like that. But tonight is a massive disappointment for me, I seriously thought we could do Italy. Massive steps since the last tournament, gets hoping it's the start of something
Still a learning experience for him and he seems an intelligent bloke so he'll have taken the failings on board. Overall he did a cracking job imo.
this for me, tonight i watched players looking for an easy option, falling over too easily and hoofing it forward rather than trying to play it out...i think he got his starting line up wrong, saka is a good little player but this was a massive occasion for him and i feel he would have been better used as an impact sub this game (he will learn from it though and i take my hat off to the lad for having the balls to be one of the first five - respect) the italians were a little shell shocked after we scored and that is when we should have gone at them, first time they have been behind in a game in a long time, instead we handed them the initiative.
Chief football writer of the times just posted... That saka, sancho and Rashford have all be racially abused online since the game. Expect the taking of the knee to stick around given that.
For me I think it's a crossroads for the players involved careers - after everything has calmed down, do they think to themselves "I got to a European final and got beat on penalties, that's as good as it gets" or did they think "I got to a European final and got beat on penalties, it ain't gonna happen again".
No. For me he only did an adequate job. Look at how narrow the win against Denmark was. How well did we play against Scotland? How lucky were we in not playing the Germany team that beat Portugal, and even then they were unlucky not to put a couple past us! We played almost the entire tournament in our own back yard, ffs - so if Southgate had done a cracking job then we would have come away with the trophy! I don't think he should be sacked, but neither does he deserve a pat on the back.
Same could be said of Italy mate. They were absolute ****e for 90 minutes against Austria who had a goal disallowed and a blatant penalty not given both for electronic-microscope distance VAR off-sides ... and then in E-T Mancini was superb and brought on two fresh forwards and dominated the game. Against Spain they were useless but as Spain spent all their superior possession in tippy-tappy farting around near the centre circle Italy snuck through on pens. Fine margins for Italy too.
Yes, but I wasn't critiquing Mancini's performance, I responded to an opinion that Southgate did a cracking job!
Football isn't played on paper and his teams performances don't reflect his record. I believe another manager could take this squad to the next level
Kane cannot go to Man c on that performance he just strolled about again, the Italians put a tackle in and we cannot deal with it, they beat Belgium and Spain and went for it and we were were ****e again in the 2nd half as usual. pathetic and don't console them penalty misses for christ sake they were awfull. We will never get that chance again in my lifetime so next manager ? the jocks will be pissing themselves now. The worry is how many at the next home world cup qualifier ?.
yup, came on for trippier? completely forgot, so i will chalk that one down to stress and old age...but thank you for your assistance in helping me make a complete tool of myself
Reaching the final of the Euros and only losing by the odd kick = an adequate job. You're a tough taskmaster mate. I've seen us do a lot worse with arguably better sides.
