Nah, nothing has beaten that glorious May day and its aftermath in 1976 although I was a wee bit too young to appreciate 1966.
Saints have given me much more joy and angst over the years than England but that's my personal feeling. I loved the feeling of winning tonight but that Semi-Final win at Anfield topped it, maybe because we were bigger underdogs, I don't know.
In a weird way part of me thinks that winning like this is better than a clean sheet. I mean, it's one thing as opposition knowing that you're up against a side who doesn't concede, but another entirely to know you're up against a side who rarely concedes and can also come from behind. Regardless what happens I'm proud as **** of this group. I genuinely think Italy are a better all round team than us but in a one off at Wembley then we've got at least a 50/50 chance imo. INGERLAND INGERLAND INGERLAND
You know what I’m going to remind you of now don’t you? Actually, no rush. Enjoy the moment like most of the rest of us. And thanks mate, for getting us to the final. Clearly you’re the secret ingredient we’ve been missing for 55 years!
Denmark started the game better than England but Denmark looked tired after an hour of working so hard. After that it was England's to win. How has Foden and Grealish featured so little?!
Unreal!! can’t believe it. We were sensational, Sterling gave possibly the best performance in an England shirt in decades. The whole team were amazing, composed, a constant threat and managed the game. Southgate was bold, brave, taking grealish off was a stroke of genius, going 5 at the back worked a treat. Just ****ing amazing. Get in
Argentina deserved to win in 86, they were the better side and went on to win the tournament. The whole world remembers Maradona’s other goal, not the hand of God. England were the better team - just - and deserved to win last night, even if it did take a dodgy pen to decide it.
England have improved immensely since the 2018 World Cup, not least in terms of ball retentión, so really it is no surprise that the side has reached the final.
Harry Maguire really is some player. Don't watch him week in week out for Utd, but he has been an absolute beast this tournament. Walker had a great game too which is pleasing because I was thinking he might be our weak link.
Yeah, Walker was immense last night. Shaw a bit more muted, attacking wise anyway, but he's been one of the players of the tournament up to now.
Yeah, I was 5 in 66 so don't really remember it; whereas the memories of that glorious spring and summer of 76, which seemed to go on for ever, has sustained me through a lot of dark winters. I have been saying for decades that if either England or Saints win another major trophy in my lifetime, I'd die a happy man. It's not really a joke anymore, they both need to hurry it up a bit.
I do remember ‘66. It was magic. Remember it was in the swinging ‘60s when England was already considered the coolest place on Earth. Don’t get all the talk about the penalty...was it or wasn’t it....Denmark wouldn’t have cared if it had been them. There have been moments in the past where things didn’t go our way. However, the most important question is ‘Will Fran manage to watch the match on Sunday?’. Only saw minutes of yesterday’s game. Obviously not as brave as I was at 15
Yep, fully agree, although this is good I can't enjoy it as much as the euphoria of 1976. As for '66 I was serving overseas then, listened to it on BFBS who reverted to their scheduled programmes at end of normal time so we didn't find out the result until hours after the final whistle.....how times have changed!
I think I owe Gareth Southgate an apology. I had serious doubts about his ability after the Scotland game but he's absolutely nailed the knockout games tactically. And the harmony in the squad is at all time high. Regardless of the result on Sunday we really do have a national team to be proud of again.
