Everyone said that George Galloway would divide the Labour vote and hand the seat to the Tories but he actually won it for Labour by taking votes off both of them. How many would-be Tory voters stayed home after the Matt Hancock debacle?

Batley and Spen clearly still a Labour fortress. They had a majority of 8,961 in 2017, a majority of 3,525 in 2019 and a majority of 323 in 2021. Although the Labour party managed to retain the seat, former No10 pollster James Johnson warned of a major swing away from the Opposition. Despite the seat being held by Labour since 1997, Mr Johnson revealed there had been a 2.9 percent swing to the Tories. According to the pollster, this is the largest swing towards a governing party in 39 years.
