What manager wouldn’t be a gamble? The only thing close to a sure fire solution would be to somehow appoint Pep, Klopp or Conte and throw untold millions at them. That was never going to happen, as the speed at which the Conte talks broke down showed. It’s a gamble I’m ultimately happy we’ve taken, as would I be if we had appointed Potter (or someone like Ten Hag who has more pedigree but is no less a gamble for other reasons).
Or Mourinho.....or maybe not. I agree with you but the gamble is that he has stepped up a level; I think the intention was to find a manager with a better CV - like Conte- but perhaps there was nobody available. Conte, like Mourinho, is s bad example because a manager used to having limitless transfer funds and a suffer no fools personality is not the right choice for Spurs. Somebody who can build a team spirit, recruit good players at affordable prices and bring on young players is needed. Not an easy job.
In our recent history, Jol, Redknapp nor Poch had the pedigree that we wanted now and they turned out okay. I think appointing Nuno is more about the type of coach he is and he just may be what we need. Someone who can actually manage the team and get the best out of the players. He seemed like a genuine and nice guy and hopefully this will have an effect on the squad. Christ, if he can get Doherty to play like he did a couple of years ago, he must be doing something right. We don't need any primma donna type manager like Conte et al. We need someone more "grounded". Let's give him a chance.
He's obviously not anyone at the club's first choice but usually that's no bad thing. BMJ and Poch weren't either. I'm concerned at having Mendes further involved. So far, he's supplied us with Gedson, Vinicius and Doherty. Absolutely underwhelming. However my main concern is that he's been given a 2 year contract. Levy may have wanted Van Gaal but when he appointed Poch, it was for 5 years. Straight off, he gave him authority. That's backing the new guy and it sends a message to the dressing room..."He's here to stay and we back him to the hilt." Two years suggests that he's here whilst the manager they really wanted frees himself from his current contract.
Can imagine the phone call went something like this “2 years Nuno lad, get your fat mate to sort us out with a few cheapo transfer bargains to tickle the fans and we will just meh, I dunno I guess we will see how it is in a few years? anyway gotta dash Bargain Hunt is on the tele…oh before I go, remember to go full Poch in the interview, they love that, anyway, bye…don’t ring me, I’ll ring you” “How much do I get to spend in the summer, Mr Levy?” “Good luck Jose, I mean Nuno, bye”
I think I have made clear my views on Portuguese football in recent days so I can't say I am delighted at the news, but as you say he always seem to have a smile on his face and he does come across as a genuine humble decent man. I hope he can show me that not all Portuguese managers produce defensive reactive teams, which is my experience so far. I wish him well in his new job and hope he is so good we are forced to give him a new contract and forget about Pochettino.
He’s a glorified caretaker manager. Sacked by Wolves, rejected by Palace and Everton. Spurs just want him to steady the ship before Poch comes back in 2 years time.
We don't know that they rejected him. And I would add that Nuno is on paper a better option than Benitez and certainly better than Vieira.
No doubt a lot will be unhappy but at least you can see why Everton appointed Rafa. Spurs appointing Nuno on the other hand. What a strange appointment. He doesn’t tick any boxes at all.
Only an owner so out of touch that they can't see that appointing a manager synonymous with their local rivals wouldn't be a potential issue On the subject of other managers, it's come to light why various appointments were either dropped or never got beyond the preliminary stages - ten Hag didn't want to bring any coaches with him from Ajax (nice of De Telegraaf to mention that yesterday, rather than two months ago...) - Potter wasn't going to budge unless we paid Brighton £20m compensation - Rodgers had an even higher compensation fee - Fonseca expected the club to pay his tax bill - Rangnick is a weird one, because in the past few years he's turned down Los Ladrones and Chelsea so at some point someone should ask what he actually wants Factor in appointing Paratici, which both reset the process and saw Hitchen's list of candidates effectively torn up, that explains the rest of the wait
Yet they still preferred Rafa over Nuno. I think that appointment ends in tears for Everton fwiw. Ten Hag and Potter could easily have been got and would have been realistic but better options than the cheap short term option Spurs have gone for. Hope I’m wrong but yet again feels like a bad decision by Spurs.
If De Telegraaf are correct and ten Hag wasn't bringing any coaches with him I can understand pulling the plug, as that would have meant not only would we have had to pay Ajax compensation (which ticked up when his contract extended by a year) but also had to pay compensation for a coaching team too, and not necessarily Ajax's - and given in the last couple of years we had to pay compensation for Lille's entire coaching staff then pay compensation when sacking them wholesale, I can see why that gave us pause In terms of Potter, if Brighton really were expecting us to pay £20m then it only really makes sense to pay that if he was our No1 choice, and the fact is that he was third or fourth on Hitchen's list (and the likes of Dan KP and Alasdair Gold mentioned that some on the board weren't convinced) so at that point paying that much doesn't stack, and that's before pointing out how Nagelsmann cost Bayern £15m
I was talking about Jose (might be getting my wires mixed with who you are on about). Pretty sure Levy hired him and I would place Mourinho in chelsea folklore just as Liverpool have Benitez.
The equivalent for Spurs would be hiring George Graham or Arsene Wenger Levy's sacked the former while ignoring the "helpful" suggestions of Jamie O'Hara to hire the latter
We can only hope for the best. I'm positive that Levy or the Italian has drummed into him the importance of the Spurs DNA whatever that is!
