One of my clients has one and it works out no difference cost wise between it and the car she had which was a Volvo XC90. Over 3 years and she will see a benefit of around £100 per month as the services or lack of need for them kicks in.
I quite like the idea of one.

Ditto. That's exactly how I see it and what I'm doing.
Wonder what will happen when more cars are electric and they get stuck in one of those mega jams somewhere... meaning those jams when there's like 10 mile tailback on motorway stuck for a few hours. Of course they arent commonplace but they do happen. When it happens theyll be dozens, even hundreds, of those electric cars with drained batteries! What happens then? Serious question.

I think in due course we'll all have to have one or something similar (hydrogen?). Charging infrastructure will get better and conventional petrol stations will start to close down, the reverse of how it is now. Hopefully they'll become more affordable and the useable range will get better. However we'll never get to the point where an electric car will have the range of, say, a diesel VW, like 700-800 miles or so pulling a caravan. There'll need to be a change of mindset amongst drivers, drive less, use public transport, sharing, all those things we don't like will need to be taken on board.
I could well be dead before it impacts me a lot but it's coming like it or not.

Quite possibly, but that's decades away. What will happen meanwhile in such a scenario. It's gonna happen. I can't see any outcome other that a total mess lasting days rather than hours!

Question I've never seen answered is how all the people who live in flats, high rises and all places with no off street parking, going to charge their cars?

If all cars go electric and with the current way of charging, there is going to be charging cables everywhere. With the sue happy climate we live in, it just won't work... We are going to have to figure out a way to wireless charge! I know BMW do a charge pad that can be fitted to the bottom of your car and then a pad on your drive to do it wirelessly. But not sure if many more do it?

i'm already taxed by the mile. it's called fuel tax and i pay about 7-8p per mile. the government is scared that if we all go electric they'll suffer a shortfall, so they'll start getting electric car drivers to pay more as things go along. bastards.

If they aren’t moving they aren’t draining the battery. No different to a petrol car.

There’s not a car on the road that can do 700-800 miles on a full tank while pulling a caravan. Trust me, I’ve looked.

There will be charging stations much like petrol stations right now. Rapid charging technology will make it happen.

Or you can get a hydrogen fuel cell car and emit water. They take a few seconds to fill up.

This is a really interesting thread, and evidence that we really do overestimate what current petrol and diesel cars are capable of - I do it myself all the time. We think they are invincible, and they really aren’t.

Toyota RAV4 - get around 50mpg - compares previous cars Toureg circa 20 and Merc E350 circa 30 - and much cheaper to buy - highly recommended, the only annoying feature is opening and closing the rear door which only works in slow motion with loud beeps and gets confused if you try to open or close it faster by hand - it pisses me off - hurry the **** up

Well ok that’s true. But the draw on the charge is massively reduced. A petrol car left running in a traffic jam will run out of fuel eventually.
Again, we think our cars are invincible!

Your right they aren't, but untill things improve dramatically. Electric cars in the real world for the vast majority of people can't get anywhere near the internal combustion engine

It'll come sooner than you think, there have already been successful trials around the world and in UK.

Totally agree. But for most people’s needs, most days, an electric car has plenty of range. I’m lucky, I have two cars and I reckon I’ll go electric with the one I use for work next year.

I got my latest model thanks to Hull City Council, unlimited mileage, own double seat and the country runs are great in this Summer weather.
