    The annoying thing is that Germany have nothing to lose by conceding any more. They could lose 100-0 and they'd still finish above Portugal if Portugal lose. So they can afford to chuck everything at Hungary.

    Oh absolutely. But that doesn't have any relevance to the size of a German loss. Germany have nothing to gain by "holding onto" a 1-0 defeat. They can afford to risk conceding in pursuit of an equaliser.
