Dessert is a pretencious word brought in somewhere down the line

 

Agree on the cheese and biscuits part but up north, anything else served after the main course is called Pudding. Remember Sunday dinners in our house my Mum would ask does everyone want pudding and then serve the left over Yorkshire Puddings but with Golden Syrup on instead of gravy.
