Lee Cattermole claims Sunderland are in need of a more 'measured approach' as they prepare to take on Arsenal on Sunday sitting in 16th position in the Premier League. The Black Cats' skipper believes the squad must start working harder in the attempt to cull their defensive deficiencies which have appeared in the Sunderland rearguard. Steve Bruce's side have won only one of their seven league games to date and collected just six points in the process, but the 23-year-old midfielder has hit out at the 'hysteria' at the Stadium of Light after such a poor start to the season. He said: "If we had beaten Norwich away, we would have been back up to seventh, eighth. Two wins in the Premier League - I know it's hard to do that, but if you get two back-to-back wins, it can soon change.."It's all so close at the minute and we really shouldn't be reading too much into leagues. We should be focussing on the team and how we are playing as a unit. "At the minute, we just need to start keeping more clean sheets, and that starts from the top as a team. "We need to work a bit harder and have a better shape and concede fewer goals, and that will give us a chance of winning some games." Hard Cattermole is adamant that it will take time for the North East outfit to gel following the summer recruitment drive, adding: "We have brought nine, 10 new players here and it's not going to happen overnight, but I think you can see the base of the team is good and we will hopefully progress from there. "But at this time of the season, it's hard with all the international breaks. You are playing two and three breaks and then an international, then two or three games and another break. "Players aren't getting back for 10, 12 days and it's really hard, especially with the new players we have got in. "We have got two big games now, away to Arsenal and away to Bolton, who are both struggling as well, so hopefully we can go there and counter that and come away with some points and turn our season around. "That's what we have got to do There;s that phrase "gel as a team again"?
It's a sure thing that when players and backroom staff, as they have been now for a few weeks, come out and start to echo the same ****e the under pressure manager trots out, things are not good. Wouldn't it be much better they all just came clean and said we have been totally ****e now for 8 or 9 months and really have to start getting it right nor we will be in trouble. All this line of bollocks says to me is that they all think everything is fine and there is nothing wrong. Denial of the truth is not the answers I need to hear. That is as worrying as the actual crap they serve up each week to me. I don't think they think there is a problem and that's a terrifying prospect imo. You can't put something right if you don't see the problem to start with. We have been awful since January and barring about 3 halves of football this season, we look every inch a club in all sorts of trouble. I find it highly insulting that the manager and players seem hell bent on ticking us off every week for being hacked off watching this tripe, instead of accepting responsibility for it and doing something about it. Let's see what excuses they find after today, next week and then v Villa. We could be in the bottom 3 after 12 games and that's a third of the season gone. Tip of the day for Bruce and cattermole. Shut the **** up for a bit and start winning some games. Actions speak louder than words.
This is exactly how I feel! Bruce seems to think he's the best manager in the world when we win, but we lose and the team needs to 'gel' and we're not being fair with our criticism
