There still seems a reluctance by some fans to accept how our Club has to operate to survive. Whatever way you judge it - history, ground size, catchment area, owners bank balance - in the Premiership we are a very small fish in a very big pond and within those confines we have to live with, at the most, limited debt. We have learned the lessons of previous mistakes. When we had to sell Maddison it was because we had run up a debt that to us was unsustainable but the sort of debt that one of the bigger clubs would just shrug off. Arsenal could afford to pay Ozil stupid money to just sit in the stand - the stupid deal we agreed with Naismith nearly pushed us over the edge. We are not going to repeat those errors. The Buendia deal has covered the covid losses and cannot be used for incoming transfers. We can rely on the TV money etc we get next year and have hope that full stadiums will be allowed but the bulk of any money spent on incoming players will have to come from player sales and any incomings will have to fit in our wage budget which will be one of the smallest in the league if not the smallest. Footballers are in the game for the money and the glory and loyalty, even amongst players who have close allegiance to a Club, goes out of the window if the right Club and the right money come calling. Kane earns a fortune at Spurs. If Buendia is now on £75k a week however much are Villa paying Grealish but if Man City come in for Kane or Grealish they will be off and there will be little Spurs or Villa can do to stop them. Burnley have always had to sell their best players to bigger Clubs and Brighton will face the same in the next month with White and a couple more. It is a fact of modern football and the smaller clubs have to learn how to replace or develop replacements. Established Premiership players will not come here for the wages we will pay so any reinforcements we buy will be largely unknown names and a gamble. The Club have to work on the basis that we will come straight back down and budget accordingly as promoted clubs getting quickly relegated is another increasing fact of modern football. Last season of the 3 relegated Clubs 2 had only been up one season and the other only 2 years. The supporters have to accept existence within those confines and enjoy next season for what it is - an entertainment and a chance to see some of the best players in the world.

    I read he's on £17k week

At 24 and a fine England pedigree £15m could look like chicken feed if he keeps scoring.

Pukki isn't getting any younger so IF we get relegated we would have a striker that knows the Championship.

Aarons will go for big money so this would be a gamble worth taking.

You state that Arsenal can afford to pay stupid money to have players sitting on the bench and if Man U come calling Villa would be forced to sell ?

Aston Villa's billionaire owner is worth more than Kroenke and the Glazers so if they want to play hardball with Grealish and keep him then they surely can .

Ozil was left out because he criticised the CCP and Chinese TV station CCTV pulled Arsenal games for broadcast.

I did say that players are mainly interested in money and glory. Will Grealish or Kane win trophies at Villa or Spurs - no. Will they win them with Man City - yes. I just used Arsenal and Ozil as an example of how the big boys can waste vast sums of money and survive unlike us smaller Clubs. Incidentally I did say Man City and not Man Utd and their owner has more money than the rest put together.

Man City owners are worth about $22b Chelsea's Abramovic alone is worth about $15b and the combined wealth of him and the other 18 is about $80 b so you don't know what you are talking about .
Villa can compete with the most vulgar foreign rich boys and players being money hungry Grealish I doubt will be sold .

You always have a very practical approach to our clubs finances but you would hope that if they bring in about £70m from Buendia and Aarons alone and the £180m TV revenue we may be able to fork out a bit on players .

To not strengthen and expect a different result to 2019-20 would be foolhardy in my personal opinion.

The figure you quote is the net worth of his privately owned business group. As Deputy Prime Minister he is able to organise rules regarding his own tax affairs and if you look at the many businesses he is connected with either as Chief Exec or otherwise that have no obvious 'owner ' it is often assumed, rightly or wrongly, that they are his. As these Groups are worth several hundred billion pounds I stand by my views. All owners of these big clubs are multi billionaires but it boils down to how much of their wealth they are prepared to pour into the Club without any obvious return. Mansour has put nearly £3billion into Man City and if the Villa owner does the same they might make up ground on the top 4 but it will take time and Grealish will be looking at the next 5 years. You may be right but I will be amazed if Grealish and Kane are at their current Clubs when the season starts.
I do have a practical approach to our finances - once an Accountant always an Accountant - and I do worry about taking gambles as we have no Plan B to pay debts if things go wrong. As I said earlier I suspect that the money for Buendia will be used to make our 20/21 accounts look respectable. Of course, a proportion of other sales and the TV money will be available to spend but whether it will be enough to stay up is another matter. If we do have a decent war chest it will be because we have sold our best 2 or 3 players which is not the ideal way to start strengthening the team

Villa's owner's are worth over £5b so if Grealish leaves it won't be over wages .

I'm not pro throw the kitchen sink at signing players gambling on our future by any stretch.

We have already signed Gianoulis and Gibson for about £14m combined which is quite a chunk for us , I presume that's coming out of the 21-22 coffers ?

Armstrong for a reported £15m is a bit steep but potentially we can make an enormous profit if he succeeds but it's still a risk .

Anyone over £10m and I will be wincing after the Naismith disaster.

Aarons will be off but he's not a match winner for us and we could use the £35m reported asking fee for several players.

Taking into account the loss of revenue from the sexy gambling firm sponsor, ticket prices Covid-19 etc I will not be too critical if we are Conservative in our player recruitment.

It's worked in the past .

Yep to sell Buendia for £35m and blow £25m on him would be madness .

Half that would be costly for us

Most of our Ligue 1 Clubs are struggling financially and I am certain there are several bargains around. Nice have a decent young forward, Amine Gouiri, who can play as an out and out striker or as a number 10 who will not be on big wages and whilst officially valued at £25m would, I am certain, be sold for, say, £18m

It was mentioned in the Pinkun a while back that half of the money made from selling Emi would double our £15m budget to £30m. If Aarons was to go for around £30m then it could increase by a similar amount with the rest of the money going to the club's management budget.

Even if that is true, the MFW wishlist of "Gunn, Adarabioyo, Skipp, Billing and Armstrong" would still be out of our reach. Gunn seems most likely at the moment and another Skipp loan could be managed if Spurs were to agree. If not, we might go for a similar loan deal for James Garner, a young DM from ManUtd who was on loan at Forest last season.

One out of Adarabioyo, Billing and Armstrong might also be possible for between £10m and £15m, but not all of them. Only one source, Inside Futbol, has suggested a £25m fee for Armstrong as other sources stick with £15m. Paid in installments, that could be manageable, as would a similar amount for Billing or £10m for Adarabioyo but not all three. There will also be some signings of players we've never heard of which may or may not work out.

Isn't our previous record signing RvW at £8.5m? Sounds like we'll need to double that if we want Armstrong and even then we might miss out. I'm actually not too concerned about up top with Idah on the brink plus Hugill as an alternative. Midfield is my main concern - DM obviously and an attacking Bendy replacement. I'm assuming McLean and Rupp will continue to be our CM options. What happened to the Ajer rumours or is he the new Quag?

A week ago this was put out but no news I've seen of any progress:

"Bayer Leverkusen are interested in signing Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer. Sky Germany understands the clubs are in talks over a potential deal for the Norway international. Ajer, who has one year left on his contract, said last week: "It is probably for the best that something should happen this year.""

We're still said to be interested, as are Newcastle.

Edit: More positive news on the potential signing of Angus Gunn:

I actually like the fact we operate a self financing club - it makes any successes taste that little bit sweeter.

Just listened to the Pinkun's podcast on my way to work:

Pinkun believe that Gunn will be completed early next week, likely to be our first announcement.
Paddy Davitt says the players Norwich are targetting will take people by surprise, in a good way (from a "senior club source").
Armstrong might be available for as little as £8m, so Blackburn keen to start a bidding war.

Bit of a downer 'but' at the end of that:

"But if the Canaries could not afford the £12 million Celtic wanted for giant centre-back Kristoffer Ajer, what are the chances of Mendez bringing his own brand speed, skill and subtle vision to Carrow Road?"

Mendez looks good to fill the hole left by Emi and that is one position where we should be prepared to pay more.

Going back to the earlier rant on here about Jon Newsome, here is a classic example of his analysis of why we need Brandon Williams:

    https://www.footballtransfertavern....nsfer-rumours-of-a-move-to-norwich-city-e137/

He describes Williams' "sweet left foot" (Williams is right footed) and how he could settle our problems at LB (what problems?) when Williams' first position is RB (though he can cover at LB). Newsome was a useful player, but he's a useless pundit.

    That article is extraordinarily crap!

"if Farke could tempt him down to Carrow Road and keep Max Aarons, they would have a totally new dynamic on each side when attacking." - I mean that literally contradicts itself.

Also saying we have no regular starter at LB is pretty unfair, considering Giannoulis signed in January and only missed games through injury/suspension after that.
