Still only two 2yos entered this year: both bound for Ascot.

Kings Lynn was unlucky not to be placed yesterday. Murphy reported the gelding had no run at all. He also mentioned he's getting faster. As a 2yo his important win was over 6.5f.
He's the first foal of a Kyllachy mare Kinematic who is out of a mare who finished 2nd in the Lupe. She's had 3 foals and they've all won. She looks a useful mare and has her 2yo Spring is Sprung running today in the Windsor Castle (Weaver mentioned her yesterday).
Kinematic has a yearling colt by Recorder and a filly foal full-sister to Kings Lynn. Kinematic's half-sister Humdrum has been a reasonable mare too. She's had 7 foals in training 5 of which have won, one was a dud and the last is the 2yo Everyday who is yet to run.

Selling the right (wrong) mares is a skill. If Twilight Gleaming wins the first there may be some red faces. The dam was sold as an unraced 3yo by the Royal Stud in 2015.

Well, she didn't win but she did run well. The Queen had a half-sister to the dam called Tidal Stream, who similarly was unraced. After two seasons at stud and no produce she was sold in foal to Land Force. The buyer was a certain group managed by errr.. a gentleman who also manages the errr.... racehorses of HM. A foal was born early this year and apparently is 'a bull'. These things happen.
Perhaps more apposite is the 2yo half-brother to Twilight Gleaming's dam who is entered for Saturday's Chesham. The colt is called Reach for the Moon.

The Queen turned up at Ascot on Saturday and had some excitement with two of her horses. First Reach for the Moon: apparently he’d been showing a fair bit on the gallops and just last week had left his galloping companion for dead. The optimism was justified as the colt ran a fine race to be 2nd to Coolmore’s Point Lonsdale. Dettori got a 2 day suspension for whip overuse but if anything I’d say the winner had the harder race. Reach for the Moon needs to get over this effort and I’d like to see him appearing in August sometime in a maiden somewhere. If he shows the same ability, then is the time to think of listed or Group races.
His dam Golden Stream (Sadler’s Wells) was a useful filly and full-sister to Oaks 2nd Flight of Fancy. Unlike her older sister she was speedier but never won over further than 7f. So far she has produced two winners, the temperamental but talented Mainstream (Dansili) and the fairly ordinary gelding Chalk Stream, who’s a full brother.
So a promising colt who hopefully will do a lot better. There’s a Dubawi yearling half-sister and a Siyouni colt foal. Gosden has 3 other Royal 2yos, but only one is from the Royal Stud. That’s the Dubawi colt Dukedom out of Nathra who was not far off being a top-class filly.

Kings Lynn put in a good performance in the Wokingham and was again probably unlucky. My view is that he’s best suited by 6.5f, but other than the Maurice de Gheest there’s not much around. It will be informative to see where he goes next.

Tactical and Light Refrain were both disappointing. 7f is too far for Light Refrain and Tactical is a different horse on better going.

The Queen did have another winner (that’s 9 now), but at Newmarket on Friday. The going was on the soft side of good and Wink of an Eye seems pounds better on good to firm. Two wins on the trot makes the future more difficult for him as a handicapper.

The Queen gets to double figures for the year with the victory of first time out 3yo gelding Tynwald. A win for Richard Hughes, Tynwald is the 3rd foal of Dansili mare Queen's Prize and her 3rd winner. Last year she had the useful Award Scheme who managed black type. The mare did have a 2yo but he may have been injured, the yearling is a colt by Lope de Vega, while she was due to foal to Night of Thunder.
Tynwald ran green but very enthusiastically, which is half the battle. Hughes does well for HM with few opportunities. He does have a 2yo filly called Light Traveller who is by Siyouni out of a Dubawi mare who was brought-in from Darley. I'm sure he'll be looking for Tynwald to step up on this.

Dukedom, mentioned in the piece about Reach for the Moon, makes his debut at Sandown tomorrow. By Dubawi out of an Ifraaj mare called Nathra (2nd in the Fillies Mile, won the Nell Gwyn, 2nd French 1000G), who is from the Lord Derby family of Ouija Board etc.. Gosden seems to prefer Sandown as a starting point for his 2yos, and often his better ones. It will be a great disappointment if he doesn't show a lot of promise.

Two winners on Saturday makes a nice change. Wink of an Eye continues to improve, but I have to ask why he's in the this week's July Sales (he's not the only one FTO winner Tynwald is in there too)? Will he/they be sold?
Good to see Portfolio winning at last because as a Deep Impact filly out of the fair filly Diploma she must be valuable now. For the first time she was ridden as her dam was ridden and that's from the front. She may be like her dam in other ways that she was inconsistent.
Earlier in the week Inveigle won at Yarmouth. He has been a frustrating horse, who they seemed to think a lot of last year but eventually could only win a small maiden at Chelmsford. It looked to be the same story this year but those who have seen his gallops and the stable itself still really rates him. He works like a really good horse. Last week he may have showed it. I see he's entered for a Group 2. I'd think there'd be plenty of handicap opportunities first.
Dukedom ran promisingly. He will have to realise that promise if he's to take on his conquerer and beat him. I hope he does.

A bit more on Wink of an Eye. He has improved at least 20lb this year and it looks as if there could be more. He's certainly resolute. Although he's won twice on Good to Soft I think he's better on firmer ground. He's the fifth foal of a Nayef mare called Momentary. She is the only mare in the Royal Stud who traces back to the Oaks 2nd Flight of Fancy (there are plenty who trace back to sisters and half-sisters of FoF), who is her granddam. Momentary was unraced as a 2yo but on her second start won what is often considered an Oaks trial, a race that was once called the Sandleford Priory Stakes. After that there were great hopes for her but she ran only once more and that was disappointing.
Wink of an Eye is her fourth winner. He's by Dubawi and there is a 2yo full-sister called Discretion, who's in training with Charlton. There's no yearling but she's had a Le Havre filly-foal. Obviously something is expected of this mare and while she's been consistent she needs a step up from her produce quality-wise. Wink of an Eye may take her part way there, but it would be very positive to see her 2yo or foal stake a bigger claim for her.

Unsurprisingly Wink of an Eye was withdrawn from the July Sales. Surprisingly Chalk Stream (who's won one race so far) has also been withdrawn but Tynwald, who has run once and won once, is to be sold. I notice he's listed as a wind-sucker. There are a couple of unraced 3yo fillies to be sold; Safe Passage is a half-sister to a number of winners and the Stud already have two half-sisters in the stud; Sentence is a Dubawi daughter of a very ordinary mare who was sold for just 4,000gns last year. The latter does have the 1000G and Prix de Diane winner, Highclree, as her great granddam so is from the family of Deep Impact, Nashwan and Aureole..

Dreadful prices for the two 3yo fillies. Safe Passage goes for 1,000gns and Sentence (Dubawi) makes just 2,500gns. That must be about 1% of her cost, if the full price was paid.

good gallop reports for Reach for the Moon. Strange that only three 2yos so far entered.

A Group winner for The Queen as Light Refrain goes in at Ascot. Back over 6f, this was probably her most accomplished performance and she probably registered her best figures today. She's never going to be a Champion Sprinter but she should win more races at 6f. Being by Frankel out of a listed winning mare she now becomes a valuable broodmare prospect. She has a 2yo half-sister by Redoutes Choice called Distant Light, who is yet to go into training. There is a yearling full-sister to Light Refrain and this year her dam Light Music visited Le Havre.

Yesterday she had another winner when the Charlton trained gelding, Encourage, won his first race at Newbury. At last a winner from the Feola family hopefully he can build on this.

Some cheap prices all 3 days. The Blake's bought an unraced 3YO Shadwell gelding (Alajdal) for £13,000. At first glance appears very, very reasonable as the dam was Group placed and is a half-sister to both an Irish Oaks winner and an Irish Oaks runner-up.

Meanwhile, I see that Michael Bell himself bought Bookmark. Most eye-catching. Must think there is so unfinished business re this one.

Yes I saw Bell's purchase. Maybe try to get some Feola in his stud (if he has one).

The two 3yos (Realist and Sun Festival) made reasonable money: 36,000gns and 30,000gns respectively.

Reach for the Moon is entered for Friday's opener at Newbury. At the moment no jockey is assigned and that may be because Gosdens also have another Royal runner entered, Saga. This Invincible Spirit colt is not Royal bred but from Darley. He comes from one of their established families though his 5th dam is Petite Etoile.
In the second race Hughes brings out a 2yo for the The Queen and again not Royal bred. This filly, Intelligentsia, is by Exceed and Excel out of a listed winning mare, Discernable, that has already produced a fast filly (Ideal Beauty). This filly again comes from Darley and emanates from a Wildenstein family that traces back to the Oaks winner Lupe. Hughes seems to be moving up the Royal Trainer batting order and has two 2yo this year. The other is a Siyouni filly. Dobbs is already booked for Intelligentsia.

So 5 2yos in plain sight now. There are quite a few other older horses entered this week.

The first race gets split, yet only Reach for the Moon stands his ground and Saga waits for another day. Dettori takes the ride and unless there's an impressive newcomer should win his maiden. The colt had another positive gallop report this week. Intelligentsia also comes out (now) in the 3rd race of the day.

Bell lost a large part of his Royal patronage last week when 4 of The Queen's number were sold out of his stable. He does have an unraced 3yo filly called Stimulate. She's by Motivator out of a Danehill Dancer mare who traces back to Shergar's dam. She produced an average filly, then a dud and then this filly, who like the dam's previous offspring didn't run as a 2yo. Her last two sightings on the gallops seem to suggest she's getting the hang of things (in the last one she went well with two times winner Horsefly). I'd expect an entry for her soon. Despite the dam's lack of success they must like/rate her as she has a Dubawi yearling filly and colt foal.

A double for HM, and it's a long time since that has happened. At 2-9fav it would have been a shock if Reach for the Moon had lost today. The manner of his win was very pleasing. Always in the front 3, he took it up 2 furlongs out and bounded away from his field. Really he was just shaken up and that was all that was needed to beat the 2nd by a long looking 4 lengths and the 3rd by more that 6 lengths. His next run must be a return to Listed or Group company. He looks fully capable of succeeding in that sphere.
Her second winner was the newcomer Intelligentsia, who despite her inexperience and pricked ears throughout the race, knew exactly what to do. She only won by a long looking neck but Dobbs rode her with hands and heels and just flashed the whip in the last 50 yards. An extremely pleasing debut. She looks an attractive filly, if a little narrow and unfurnished at the moment. She can build on this if she goes the right way. A nice win for Hughes who has now had two FTO winners.

Of course the day is not over for The Queen as she has Portfolio representing her in the first at Newmarket. Only 4 runners, and a case can be made for all of them so looks a tough race for Portfolio after her recent all the way win.

Is only the Gosdens seriously training the Royal babies? They have 4 Royal 2yos (all colts), of which 2 have run and look useful, one of those has won (today see above) and the other two have now been entered. Only Hughes (intelligentsia see above) and Bell (spring is Sprung) have had 2yos entered.

Next Thursday colts Dukedom (see above), Saga (see above) and now Park Street are entered. I think we could see at least two of them line up. The latest entrant, Park Street, is a New Approach colt bred by Godolphin/Darley out of an unraced Street Cry mare. Her dam was also unraced but produced a Group 1 winner in the USA.

My Dad always said back the outsider in a field of 4. Amazingly they allowed Portfolio to be that outsider and they also allowed Moore to lead on her (as she did LTO). Never seemed in trouble and this Deep Impact filly won well. So it's a treble for HM, and her 18th winner of the year. This could be a filly who goes for something like the Galtres.
She's the first foal of Diploma. Haggas trains her full brother Educator, there's no yearling but there's an intriguing Frankel colt foal.

    Hats off for The Queen.
