I certainly see it as part of real life – at the very least - and would tend towards trying to talk with people in the same sort of way I would be doing if they were physically standing before me - and would make a point of trying to avoid the out and out hostile or idiots. Although even idiots are just fine if they’re friendly. Obviously, I can lighten up a bit if I feel comfortable in the surroundings, but this would be true in the physical world (for want of a better description), also.
