I'm not saying what's right and wrong, i'm saying the question can't be answered until we know if there are others to replace him, which we won't know until the team start playing without him.
In my opinion Rooney should without a doubt go. If (and its a big if) we get to the quarter finals, then we would have a fresh and rested world-class player to come into our side. If we don't take him and we get knocked out in the quarter-finals everyone will be on the messageboards/phone-ins saying 'why didnt we take Rooney'. We can accommodate him as we seem to like 4-3-3 these days so we can take 4 strikers including Rooney. Bent, Sturridge and Wellbeck seem to be the main 3 others I would take at the moment but that can change easily with form and injuries (those three seem to lack height-maybe room for Crouch if one of them drop off in form?).
A 'fresh and rested world class player' who has done nothing on the world stage since 2004! As to the possible phone-ins, I hardly see that as a valid reason for taking him - even an ostrich would know by then why he hadn't been included and wouldn't risk the public ridicule that would surely follow. And if you are worried about what people would say - what do you think they would say if he were to be selected and injuries in the first group game meant there were no possible replacements because he had been brought along for the ride?
There is something seriously wrong with the idea that ONE player can make or break a nations hopes of winning. I think thats where we go wrong in this country, there is so much pressure on a single player to ultimately score the goals that will win matches. No players place on the team should be guaranteed. I don't think he should be included. I think it would do England football team good not to rely on the big names and to take the players that are performing well at the time they are being selected.
I\m with Betty on this , he has been a bad boy on more than one occasion , and thus the only thing that might mend his ways(although I doubt it ) is to be dropped and omitted from the England squad for the Euros! Time to let the next guy have a chance! Still think a championship squad would do better in a tournament than a prem one! because of hunger , commitment, good attitude , high workrate etc all absent in our prem prima ballerinas! No big egos would help the manager immensely!
Does ok for England ! seems to have forgotten who pays his wages!! He will prob be gone in the winter window anyway!
Please put Deeney upfront in his preferred position ! He prob couldnt hit a barn door either , but at least would try, and give opposing defenders some running around!
