You said yesterdays players would be useless these days. So by that you are implying that if yesterdays players were playing today they wouldn’t be as good as todays. If you are saying that if you could somehow take a player out of a game in the 60s and 70s and drop them straight into a game today then I agree they would be useless. However conversely if you took a player from todays game and dropped him straight into a game in the 60s or 70s they would not only be useless but would be a quivering mess by the corner flag within a few minutes.
No that's not the argument.. I said the players of yesterday not the players of yesterday with new ability
Ok so my argument is that there is absolutely no difference in the level of ability - the only difference is the equipment, the fitness levels, the diet and the state of the pitches, the refereeing methods etc Are you trying to argue that you think that people are being born nowadays with more natural ability for sports and thats why world records are being broken etc? Because as far as I am concerned that’s bullshit.
The problem you've got is that there's a genetic requirement to achieve today's athletic ability that you can't be certain the players of yesterday have. This means you can only compare what they actually were vs what the players are capable of today.
There will be no genetic difference between the players of yesterday and the players of today. Maybe if we had tried footballer breeding programmes combined with genetic modification but we haven’t been.
No but you've clearly not understood. The genetic requirement has changed, so it's not possible to conclude which players of yesterday would or wouldn't have what's needed.
No you are talking bollocks - the genetic requirement for a footballer hasn’t changed at all neither has our genetic make-up changed in the past 50years.
[QUOTE - “Maybe if we had tried footballer breedingprogrammes combined withgenetic modification but we haven’t been.“ Are you willing to risk everything on that assumption, Mr Bond....
You're wrong everyone has to be able to reach a level of athletic ability that they didn't have to in the past. There's no way of knowing if the players of the past would be able to reach those, levels . Some would and some wouldn't, but you will never know.
But that has nothing to do with genetics. They are reaching the levels they are due to modern training methods, diet, the input of sports science, the equipment they are using. Look at how sports are having to bring in rules to control equipment due to how changes made have caused too many records to be broken - swimming, golf, tennis.
