50 years ago (well 50 + 3 days) the Derby was run with a favourite about whom there were stamina concerns (plus ça change plus c'est la même chose). That favourite won a fairly good Derby: the third went on to win the Irish Derby, unplaced were the 1st and 2nd in the St Leger. His name was Mill Reef and he was one of the great Derby winners.
Will be surprised if we see a similar quality winner this year.

    16:00 Musselburgh - Chocoya

(Should do much better this time on fast ground, after getting stuck in the mud 28-days ago LTO at Nottingham. This extended 7f is almost certainly her maximum distance, so a chance has to be taken that she will see-out the trip. Cieren Fallon rides for top trainer Hugo Palmer. 13/2 generally available at time of writing. Modest wager for me, e/w I guess.)

Best of luck to everyone on Derby Day! <cheers>

Not unusually I have no insight to offer on the big race other than to say that the moniker of the ‘Cazoo Derby’ is just plain wrong for such an historic race. Yet another example I suppose that money talks. Good luck anyone having a punt on it.

Bolshoi Ballet looks the obvious and most likely winner of The Derby but i don't like playing favourites and its boring so i've played Josephs Southern Lights ew at 33/1. Had no luck in running behind Bolshoi Ballet last time so the '6' next to its name isn't a true reflection of the horses form. Watching that the race back i'd be confident in saying with a clear run it would have finished 2nd and looks like the extra distance of todays race will suit. Way too big a price today. Done the reverse forecast with the favourite too.

Funnily enough I just watched the Derrinstown back Smokey. I hope the jockey doesn’t try to get through a non existent gap on the inside like he did that day. Agree though would have finished 2nd with a smoother passage so good luck.

I have had a couple of small bets on Southern Lights at 66/1. The first was before he ran this season and although he won his maiden well, in the style of a horse who would prefer further, he was left at 66/1 in the aftermath, so I doubled my bet.

The Derrinstown was always going to be the acid test and although he was outpaced that day, he was not alone in not being able to go with Bolshoi Ballet's kick. I felt the jockey made an error as Southern Lights was staying on, in trying to go for a daring run on the inside. As ever the door was slammed in his face and the horse had to be snatched up, losing the momentum that he had taken a fair while to build up.

You would be stretching the imagination to think he could reverse form with the winner that day but, as you say, I think he would have been second that day and with five places each-way with Skybet at 33/1 he could feasibly get a place in a race where a few have stamina doubts.

Ha ha, Bustino. So you’re the cedilla and circumflex man with a Frog’s keyboard!
Yes, Mill Reef was a quality Derby winner. In fact, there were some tremendous Derby winners in that ten year stretch leading up to Mill Reef.
By comparison, the last ten winners are second rate.

I have been calling it the Wazoo Derby since the start. More of a US term, it refers to the anus.

They are the home covid testing things. My wife has a box of them at home. Supposed to use them if she has to go into the office for anything. Only around 45% accuracy apparently

Yeah, I was surprised anyone was using one before going racing. Is it a requirement for Epsom?

we went to Uttoxeter Thursday and no tests, no questions asked and just a simple nice process of going racing,
