how many of our youngsters in the last 10-20 years have actually been that good?
We haven’t got that bit right in all honesty.

No wonder he’s reluctant. He clearly knows how limited that approach is.

How much do you think we need to spend, both in terms of transfer fees and wages, in order to challenge for the title immediately?
I'd suggest that it's a lot of money and we also need a serious clearout, which won't bring in a lot of cash in the current environment.
Conte likes to play with three centre-halves in his starting XI, for example. We've got plenty, but how many of them are good enough for that?

We had a good run a while ago, which resulted in a bunch of Premier League quality players, from Mason to Kane.
If we could replicate that in the long-run, then that would be great.

One of the major problems is that Chelsea and City hoover up a lot of the talent and loan most of them out.
It works very well for them and probably more than pays for itself, but we're miles behind them there.

On February 13th a thread was written called "the way forward".
The majority of the posters saw that JM needed to go.
That was OVER TWO MONTHS before he was sacked and nearly FOUR MONTHS AGO.

What the hell was the club doing in this time?

We appear to not have made any concrete plans which is insanely bad planning.

It was clear in February that JM had to go. There is no excuse for us not to have a manager in place 2 weeks after the premier league season has ended.

I said months ago that inaction would affect our sales and buys as a new manager would need to be in place to make the decisions necessary. We are going affect the start of next season through sheer and avoidable stupidity imo.

So far Nagelsmann/Pochettino and now Conte look to have fallen through. The next manager is hardly starting on a strong footing being publicly known as the 4th or 5th choice.

    It's a mess...and one that was avoidable.

This ain't hindsight either cos these points have been raised in the past.

this is the problem though, how many of them end up actually being good enough and stay with us?
We have to spend money to stay competitive, and right now we’re in major need of over due surgery.

if Levy won’t budge, we’re ****ed.

it really doesn’t matter who the manager is. May as well hire Scott Parker and go for the cheap option as always.

Skipp, Parrott (scored his first 2 senior international goals last night), Scarlett, Devine. Tanganga who is already part of the first team squad. Plus Sessegnon. That’s not a bad cohort.

Basically though we want a project manager to rebuild the squad in the long term and have a better stab at managing it over time than Poch/Levy did the last time we had a truly strong team in order to ensure we stay at the top after peaking. Conte wants to come in and win straight away. Clearly he thinks we need to spend a considerable amount of money to make that happen, especially if Kane leaves. To be fair to him, he’s probably looked at the squad and thought we need 2 or 3 starting XI CBs, at least one if not two 8s in midfield, and maybe a RWB too. We might have a bit of cash to spend this summer but not that much. Especially if Kane stays. It clearly wasn’t going to work, unfortunately.

Another ‘project’ is exactly what Spurs don’t need.

Conte or not, the club do need to spend money on 4-5 decent players, that’s just a clear fact. Also need to get rid of the dross that has exceeded their welcome by about 3-4 years too

The same applies to most clubs, though.
Chelsea's academy is superb, yet they've only had a few recently break through and even they get slagged off by a lot of people.
Mason Mount looked miles ahead of a lot of his peers, but he's got tons of stick.

We're not going to be producing Ledley Kings and Harry Kanes all the time. Nobody does.
If we can get some Livermores, Townsends, Masons and the like on a regular basis and the odd regular starter, then we're doing well.
Skipp and Tanganga are very promising, but it looks like slim pickings apart from that, unfortunately.
I'm probably doing a disservice to a few of them there. I hope I am and they prove me wrong.

sadly a project is exactly what it’s going to be. We’re never gonna turn our fortunes round in such a short space of time to challenge for silverware. We’re miles off the pace.

a project is inevitable. We should be straight back on the phone to Poch. I know he divides opinion, but it’s far less risky than an unknown IMO.

I get what you’re saying, but Chelsea (terrible example as they have infinite money) also spend rather than making such a stance over youth. It’s really naive. I’m not saying we can/should spend like Chelsea, but our attitude needs to change.

While I disagree on needing a project because I think the squad is in a **** state right now, I do agree it’s a shambles.

Levy puts the messaging out that he wants a manager who will play exciting football and promote youth. The ‘Spurs DNA’. Nagelsmann gets snapped up by Bayern, fair enough. Ten Hag’s contract is extended by Ajax so they have some more protection if we want him - fair enough, he’s still gettable, just more expensive. Rodgers rules himself out from day 1. PSG also extend Poch’s contract. Potter doesn’t leap at the job, at least outwardly he says he’s committed to his current role. Fair enough, that’s what you’d expect him to say, not an outward rebuttal though.

Suddenly a shiny Antonio Conte appears and Levy gets distracted, spends days trying to convince him to join when he was never going to be that profile of manager. Completely loses track of his vision that, rightly or wrongly he wants to implement with the new manager, to chase the latest man who’s high profile and free from other club responsibilities. That falls through.

And now where are we? Poch appears to be dead in the water. Ten Hag will cost money to get out of Ajax if we want him. Potter may be convinced to take the job. Levy has wasted time on another vanity appointment and his eyes will have lit up when he realised it was free as well.

I can excuse some things, like Bayern pipping us to Nagelsmann. But I don’t understand why there doesn’t appear to have been any movement or negotiation for weeks after that fell through, surely there was a shortlist of similar profile managers who also play good football and promote young players. Why are we sat here after the season ended high and dry with nothing to show for it?

Levy needs to decide what he wants and thinks is best for the club and not get distracted by an appointment that he thinks might look more ‘winning’ in the short term. While I accept it’s a complex process and often out of our hands, the process of replacing Jose looks amateur in the extreme from the outside.

    How, though?
As you say, we can't spend like Chelsea. We also can't spend like City, Liverpool or Man Utd. We haven't been able to spend like Arsenal.
We need to be smarter. We need to plan ahead far, far better.

Conte is a right now manager. He's in and out in a couple of years with massive spending and the trophies to show for it.
We could spend massively and still win **** all, because everyone around us will spend more.

Odd, when I try to look on Twitter there's a weird high-pitched whine

Oh, right, it's the usual torn hamstrings that come from the only reaction being the knee jerk one...
