Matthew Pennington and Josh Bowler have both been released by Everton. Pennington has already signed for Shrewsbury, Bowler's last appearance was our 8-0 tonking almost a year ago.
Was that due to injury? Or has he just not managed to get a loan out anywhere? I really would hate to be a younger player ( or any player for that matter ) out of contract in the current financial situation
I reckon the problem with players like Bowler is that they are on big wages and over the past 12 months no one in Champ or L1 has been able to afford to throw money around on loan players, they'll find upon release that they'll have to take ginormous wage cuts to get deals......from what I recall Penno was on about 10k a week at Everton, he'll be lucky to be getting 2k a week at Shrews now. Hope they saved and invested some of their ££
10k a week Is £520k a year, he could be set up for life already if he's invested it properly and not gone mad.... Or at the very least given himself a comfortable start. As you say though, wages drops will need to be taken by the vast majority of out of contract players. A lot of the younger untested players are going to have to take big steps backwards ( financially ) to prove themselfs, in the hope they do and earn moves back upwards. Clubs will hold a lot more power this summer when it comes to contracts and wages etc
It depends very much on the viewpoint of the footballer - if your ambition is to have a comfortable lifestyle by the standards of the vast majority of the population, then yes, a 3 year contract on 10k a week would indeed get you off to a good start. However, if you aspire and get sucked into the "footballers and their WAGs" instagram lifestyle, that ain't going to go very far at all. How many of us would have made the sensible choice at that age?
So another week passes .. another player leaves .. and the 2/3 who were allegedly imminent incoming seem to have had problems with their sat navs after going for lunch .. meanwhile on the Turkish owner front all has gone silent too. De ja vu some may say ! Or does our selection of ITK pundits have a hot line to suggest otherwise ?
Fair point, last summer was much better after an awful latter half of the previous season and highlighted the difference that timely, considered and targeted investment makes. You could be forgiven for fearing the worst now though in light of the seasons before that, and the leaks that have yet to be realised regarding players incoming in the last week or so.
It's June 4th... The season only really Finished properly last week, in the 2 players we have lost, one left to get first team football as he wasn't getting it here and the other has left for family reasons ( and turned down other better offers to move back to where he is ) One of the "leaked Incomings" has had a new manager come in and the manager has requested the move be stopped until he has had time to decide for himself on things, the other one I dont know enough to comment. The club is looking at multiple targets and things are moving on in the background. We haven't lost anybody we desperately wanted to keep ( a keeper who was no2 and a CB who wasn't going to be automatic first choice and was going to cost a lot of extra money to extend his deal ) I understand the reason why people are already getting the daggers out, but as I said... It's only June 4th.
My ‘maybe this year’ was actually referring to the club being sold rather than the transfers per se, but that’s all fair. Of the outgoings I thought losing Burke was a bit of a shame, but all the evidence suggests this wasn’t something the club could have done much about and I don’t begrudge him going closer to family if that is what’s happened. As you acknowledge yourself though a restive fan base with experience of disappointment in previous transfer windows can be forgiven for fearing the worst when 2 imminent more or less ‘done-deal’ signings just disappear into the ether. Glad to hear that work is ongoing in the background though and hoping for some decent business taking place, if not expecting any sock-threatening news.
