Really informative pro Conte to Spurs thread.

Ndombele haters won’t like it. LOL

I think the poll needs updating to include this guy. I’ve changed my mind.

If I had to choose a manager based on aiming to win the league next season, I’d pick Conte.

Since the stadium opened our spend has only been a little lower than Man City and Man Utd and above everyone else.
This isn't actually because we've changed our approach....it’s that ENIC's strategy is delivering income which we've spent in its entirety. The pandemic will have harmed that a bit but we seem to have borrowed a bit more than we've lost so we should be up with the biggest spenders this window.

Interesting thread, thanks for sharing. Bit of a wild leap, his assertion about Tanguy though. Both Barella and Eriksen, Conte’s #8s at Inter in that system, are hard working, tactically intelligent players. We’ve seen very little from NDombele in his time at Spurs that he has either of those qualities. Technically he can absolutely do that job but he’s too mercurial on his current showings to do it for Conte. I see Lo Celso as a far better fit because he has the work rate, that is if he can ever keep off the treatment table that is.

Based on that it’s interesting to think how the current squad matches up, and who absolutely doesn’t fit in. I see no place for Sissoko, for example. Doherty might find a new lease of life if he gets to play RWB. We’d definitely need an upgrade or two at CB but we already knew that. I wonder where Dele would fit in, whether he has the discipline to play as an 8 or whether he might fit in as one of the forward playing off Kane.

Lots to speculate about if he gets appointed.

to be honest i'm not really sure, I can't remember the season too much but we had some awful buys that summer, drinkwater (arrived injury), bakayoko (getting over serious surgery and was injured), Hazard was injured and no strength in depth in the centre of midfield.

Morata started well, got an injury midway through and never came back the same player and lost confidence. We also didn't have another forward til we signed Giroud in January but don't think Conte fancied him too much. We really fell off the tracks after January and going forward were absolutely useless whilst our solid defence wasn't what it was from the year before (Luiz had a falling out with Conte and Conte stopped playing him).

Pedro was another older and our whole forward line was lightweight and easily bullied, especially with defences playing deep and hitting us on the counter. The year before, we took advantage of htting teams on the break and we also had Costa as a fighter as well as no european football. Conte also was supposedly unhappy at our transfers so that might have had something to do with it. I always thought Conte was a gent at the club but it ended very badly between conte and roman that conte even went out to sue chelsea. Just read the article and how could i forget, it was because Conte basically told Costa to **** off after winning the league which wiped out his value lol.

One thing you'll get from Conte is 100% effort. He works his players to the bone (maybe that's why the 2nd season was a bit off?). You can't fault his record though, winning the league that many times is very impressive at different clubs

What i would say it the football isn't creative. If teams open up the counter attacking is thrilling but if teams don't open up then it's very pedestrian imo. I would say Conte is more on the defensive side of football than the creative, very similar to Simeone at Atletico

some really good points here. <ok>

completely agree about having the right people in place to oversee Kane’s departure and spending the money correctly. We simply can’t have another 2013 again. Conte’s winning record (including prem experience), and a DOF in place fills me with more confidence about finding the right players to make this work.
But at the same time, if Conte is the man to encourage Kane to stay, are we really going to provide him with enough funds to make the required changes?
I have far less faith in the latter scenario.

Regarding the Poch/PSG situation, this is very plausible IMO.

At a time when Italian football is at it's lowest standing in world football in my lifetime people still want Italian managers? I have to admit to not being excited at the prospect of more defensive minded tactics. If it had to be Italian then Ancelloti plays more in the British tradition then most but he has gone to Madrid and is taking Bale with him. Why wouldn't you.

I’m not sure a manager’s nationality is representative of the quality of their country’s standard of football though.

I think Conte is arguably one of the top 3 managers in world football right now, certainly one of the top 5. It’s a major coup for us if we do land him. I know people have made references that it’s similar to Jose but whilst Jose’s CV is phenomenal, his last 5-6 years or so had been underwhelming, Conte right now is probably in his prime as a manager.

I have tons of respect for Ancelotti but he didn’t pull up any trees with Everton despite spending a solid amount, a 10th place finish with them is a poor season both for him as a manager and them as a club. Conte on the other hand just ended Juve’s 10 year dominance in Serie A.

Sound like a broken record here but if he’s sufficiently backed (not just in terms of finances but trusted with who he wants to boot out) I think Conte could stop the rot we’ve been in for the last 3 years.

An Italian manager in Italian football is nothing but representative of the countries football. How else do you have managed pro teams and finally national sides. The PL is no longer representative of British football because it's an international league in terms of players, managers and style. Serie A unless I am mistaken is far more Italian as is the Spanish league of Spain and the French league of France.
How are you measuring a league table of world managers? Surely there are too many variables to make a proper comparison. For all we know the very best manager could be in Belarus, or Columbia. Fame and earning ability is nothing to do with quality much more to do with being in the right place at the right time. How well would Potter do at Real Madrid or City? we don't know. We have just had the manager with the best 'record' in the world at Spurs and he achieved very little. That for me proves it's all more about luck than judgement.
Italy is famous for defence and Italian managers will be imbued with that. Once again we are going for reputation rather than style of football. If we really want to pay respect to the Spurs tradition then we should be looking at Northern Europe for our managers not Spain, Portugal or Italy. We keep picking up ex Chelsea managers, a team in West London that employs far more southern European footballers than Spurs. We tend to go for Dutch, Belgian and Argentinian players or similar. It makes no sense to then get a Southern European manager to coach them. It will once again all end in tears.

    How does that prove anything?

Everybody but Daniel Levy knew when Jose went to Spurs his career was going backwards. That was 100% poor judgement.

So you then use the same set of variables to prove your argument <laugh>.
So Mouriniho was the worlds best manager until he wasn't? Yeah right!

The style and the Chelsea connection definitely worry me as do the Mourinho comparisons but that said I’d still prefer him to anyone else who has been linked simply because the potential with him as manager could be huge if it all goes right. Obviously it could all go sour and then Levy would be in a position where within 3-4 years he has sacked Poch, Jose and Conte and if that happens then realistically he’d have to seriously consider stepping aside

In Conte’s last 7 years in club football (was a stint with national side in between) he's won 5 league titles, that’s with 3 different teams and in 2 different countries. That’s an enviable record for just about any manager in world football and it’s shown he’s not just suited to Italian football nor completely representative of it if he’s achieved success in England too, so that’s how I’d measure him being one of the world’s best right now.

Feel free to mention a candidate from Belarus or Colombia who you believe could be in the debate for best manager in the world.

Potter would likely do very well with City or Madrid if he got either of the jobs, many of us wanted him here, myself included as I think he's deserving of the step up but until he gets that step up we’ll never truly know. What we do know is that Conte has proven himself at the very top multiple times and in recent seasons too which for me is something that separates him from Jose whose last league title was 6 years ago. Whilst no manager can guarantee to be the right appointment, hiring someone like Conte would likely provide a greater chance of success due to his pedigree and recent achievements.

Pochettino’s appointment would likely end in far bigger tears because the sentimental factor with him would disappear for many if he came back and continued the football we watched under him from 2019 onwards.

Think that's a bit out there spurf.

Mourinho may have had a great record, but after he hard that horrendous run before we sacked him (and he was sacked for the first time), he has never recovered to the heights that he hit. He spent a great amount at United to not win any of the great prizes but more importantly, he had changed as a manager, from protecting his players to chucking everyone under the bus. Managers have their ups and downs and once they start losing and their reputations start getting questioned, then it can spell trouble for a manager and i think Mourinho was that regardless of how successful he was in the past.

If managing is about luck than judgement, then there is no need to hire a manager. Just stick Levy is charge as he's the luckiest man in the world to be in charge of a club he supports.

You may be right but if you are it will be by chance. You ignored the fact that Chelsea are in effect (or were until this season) a largely southern European side. The introduction of youngsters like James and Mount has fundementally changed their ethos and surprise surprise a German manager is now in charge. Someone at Chelsea knows what they are doing which is more than can be said for Spurs. You are still talking about the PL as if it's an English league when it clearly isn't, but interestingly look at the teams playing attractive football and you find German, Argentinian or even British managers in charge. AVB, Mourinho, similar boring football. Jol, Redkanpp, Pochettino, much better football.
Incidentially I don't want to see Pochettino back YET.

Managing is not about luck but success is. You have to be competent but just like F1 if you are in the wrong car you ain't gonna win. Once again you tell me what we all know, Mourinho has not been as good as his earlier career. I wonder why? Could it be timing, could it be a lack of ability to change? Could it be that you can take the man out of Portugal but you cant take Portugal out of the man? The cars to be in at the moment are Chelsea or City, hopefully Liverpool will be ready to knock them down next season, it won't be Spurs sadly.

Where i will agree with you on Conte is that his football is more of the defensive kind like Simeone and i appreciate that is not what you want, even if it's possible that this will increase your chances of winning games and trophies.

In which case you are correct in going for a manager who is more expansive (to be defined as to whether that is the pep tiki taki style which i actually find dour or more like heynckes 90 MPH style which was way better to watch)
