There’s no deadline for the opt out. There’s also some people who cannot opt out though, such as shielded people.

Nope, there is, the 23rd June, in order for the surgeries to have a week to process your request before the system goes live 1st July. They’re saying you can opt out after that date, but that’ll only affect new data your entire history will have already gone. I don't have a problem with my medical records being available for medical research purposes and health planning. I am already part of the Biobank project, where I have various check-ups, tests etc and the data are available for research purposes, without any personal identifiers. Its a nice way of getting free MRI's etc, although they don't share the results unless something life threatening is detected. Having read through the info on NHS Digital its disturbingly vague about instances where the NHS might provide the required info to de-anonymise your medical history data and it would be good to get clarification of that before deciding whether to opt out or not. Can see the value for researchers of being able to access large data sets but can also see pitfalls when it is released more widely with identifiers (e.g car insurers accessing medical records to try and use them to dissallow claims or set premiums based on medical issues)
