    How come in the hastily re-recorded version of Lola do they go on about "tastes just like cherry cola" but cherry coke never came out for another 15 years?

    @Ponders Revisited any ideas?

    The Kinks – Lola

    The song was banned for including the words “coca-cola” which was against their policy on product placement. Davies had to interrupt the band's American tour to fly back to London to re-record the lyric as “cherry-cola” for the single release.

    Did the kinks sue Coca cola for using words from its song?

    You are correct, Mick, but why did Ray choose 'cherry cola' when it hadn't even been invented at that point. It must be that he was such a visionary, he just knew it would be a huge success. In fact, I reckon Coca Cola owe him big time.

    Personally, I prefer cherry Pepsi.

    Would imagine he used"cherry cola" for the very reason that it sounded horrible and didn't exist at the time.

    Ok folks, I asked a fairly simple question and as per usual only @Ponders Revisited understood it. I know that he changed the lyrics because of the BBC. Was there a cherry cola out at the time? It seems weird that it took 15 years for a drinks company to come out with cherry cola, no?

    Coca-cola is a trademark so the Kinks had to change it for the American market, cherry cola is just a drink just like orange juice, iced tea, cranberry juice etc you're confusing a drink with a trademark ie Coca-Cola Cherry as opposed to cherry cola.

    Oh ffs Michael, firstly it wasn't to do with trademarks it was to do with the BBC not endorsing product placement, so the guy flew from the US to the UK to sing cherry cola instead of coca cola. Secondly and the whole point of my question, why did Ray Davies(or his brother) change the words to cherry cola when cherry coke never came out until 1985. Lola with the cherry cola lyrics was 1970!!!! Do you get what I am saying now? Did other companies have cherry cola at the time or did the Kinks...in fact, it doesn't matter pal, I have obviously confused you and I apologise for it.
