I'd play Jones as our holding midfielder all day long. And that would also then make Burke and Greaves as our 1st choice CH's.
Was just going to say that too! He's probably worth £300k but in this market finding a buyer plus his hefty wages wouldn't be easy. Will it just be frees and loans this summer Howden or is there money to be spent?
You might. I even might but its not you or i who matter. Looks like the decision has been made what were prepared to offer. Obviously a calculation has been made to bring in another holding midfielder and play Alfie in his natural position, which is deemed to be better value than over-stretching for Burke, with all the potential squad unrest it would cause.
There is some money, but the bigger question this summer is, does it need to be spent... The amount of players available on a free or loan is frightening
I suspect some of the frees will be very nervy too, there's been a lot of good players who failed/struggled to get fixed up last summer. It feels like many sides will keep cutting their cloth too so wage demands should be realistic too
Yep For some strange reason jones is thought of as our first choice centre back now because he played the last few games there After our first choice got injured and then was continued with to try and exert some pressure onto getting our first choice centre back to agree terms on a new contract. Isn’t Burke our longest serving first team player too? And also one of the with championship experience?
Courtesy of Rick Skelton, he is still on our books out on loan, though I seem to remember there might be an option to buy, but not sure. please log in to view this image
He's free to go anywhere he wants and if his agent wasn't already talking to other clubs, he'd be a fairly lousy agent (he'll also have a decent idea of how much interest there is in him and what sort of wage he'll get).
Blimey Chazz, I agree with you! All the posts about whether Burke wants to be or should be 2nd or 3rd choice CB are nonsense. Until he was injured he was first choice and did a good job imo.
For.me it's a crying shame we haven't sorted things with Burke .. partnered alongside Greaves with Jones in the holding midfield role for me personally looked the most solid .. tbf he was also the experienced head in the middle which we did miss at times when he was missing. He is still a young lad and obvs had an occasional mistake in there but my fear is that having 2 young lads back there in Jones and Greaves they may get bullied. Greaves last season while being mightily impressive did have times were he just wasn't strong enough .. but I guess pound shillings and pence tend to determine these things. Let's hope its not false economics and doesn't cost us in the long run.

The message from the 18-year-old midfield player read: “Hi Chris, just to let you know I have signed my first professional contract this morning. “Can’t thank you enough from my time at Jackdaws and help me get on the path I am on now.
How much was McCann on a year ago? Apparently he was third rate manager back then..right? Allam’s OUT.
I prefer Burke to Alfie at centre-half. Is it just me who thinks Alfie's great in defensive midfield but looks a little shaky at centre-half? I know centre-half is his 'main' position but he looks far more comfortable as a holding mid.
I’d definitely prefer Jones in midfield. He looks the best option we have for that position, by some distance.
