Those models are also successful because they buy and invest smartly. We haven’t done so since around 2015 or 2016 as our approach to transfers has been more of a scattergun style than one with a genuine plan.
I agree that those 2 are likely the final duo we are hearing referenced at this point. They both have pros and cons. Potter knows the league and I like that he’s got an atypical background for a PL manager, including managing on the continent in a totally different environment from the PL and doing wonders at Ostersunds. Ten Hag has more ‘big club’ experience and has obviously managed in European competitions too which is a plus. He’s also won more high profile trophies than Potter. The concern with Potter is whether he will be able to step up to the biggest stage he’ll have been on yet. The concern with Ten Hag is that imports to the PL from the Netherlands, whether players or managers, have often not worked out. Whether that’s a footballing culture thing or there are more specific reasons in each particular case, I don’t know enough to say. It’s a concern to note though. I think both would try and play football in a way that Spurs fans want to see, both will be open to developing young players we bring in externally or from the academy. Both should be equipped to rebuild a team following any departures too - Ajax regularly lose players and stay amongst the strongest teams in their league, and Potter hasn’t yet had a job at a club that has been in a position to turn down major bids for their biggest players, so I imagine he’ll be used to turnover. I also think that who we appoint is meaningless unless we sort out the Football Board situation at our club too, because recruitment and management of the squad (HG balance, contracts) has been a mess the last few years and these things will continue to hamstring any manager we employ unless we sort them. Whether the solution is a DoF coming in alongside the new manager, or another fix of some sort, I have no preference but something needs to change. It doesn’t matter if either manager is used to player turnover and is willing to work at integrating new young players if the scouting and squad management/administration side of the club remains a shambles. That’s as big a concern for me as the manager appointment, IMO.
It seems like Inter's ridiculous overspending is going to see the departure of their serial winning manager...and unlike Mourinho, he's actually still winning things of note. So, welcome our new manager... please log in to view this image No, no, no...that's not him......it's... please log in to view this image Congratulations? No, it's closer but still not the one... please log in to view this image very funny but not even close... Before ENIC we finished below Liverpool every year, an average of more than six places behind. In the 2010s we finished above them 8 times out of 10. You are right that over the past three years Liverpool have been better than us but that doesn't alter the fact that ENIC have improved us more than Liverpool's owners have them.
There isn't a going rate for players above 75m. Nobody wanted to buy Coutinho except Barcelona who made a poor choice to spend that much. If they had bought Eriksen from us instead that would have had a major impact on both our futures. Neither Liverpool or Spurs had any input into Barcelona's stupid decesion but Liverpool benefited greatly.
I agree with that up to a point, but now we have nearly caught up with the bigger clubs we need to transition to a strategy more like theirs because we need to be a lot better than the likes of Ajax and Lille and even Dortmund to win trophies in England.
The going rate for Ousmane Dembele was not €105m for the simple reason that was the going rate for precisely one player in the entirety of world football, while the fees for Maguire and Chilwell were grossly inflated by English Tax rather than what the going rate was
Think it's too early for Poch to come back so out of these three who would you appoint? Conte - Hugely successful, very demanding and takes no crap and will kick some ass in our squad and potentially could persuade Kane to stay. However his footballing style is quite defensive and direct not the flair Spurs fans crave. Also he has a habit of falling out with chairmen. He will be costly as he will demand a large transfer budget. Usually favours 343 which would suit the squad we have. Bergwijn would probably be turned into a RWB with Reguilon the other side Is the right man to start a complete rebuild ? Will he have the patience? Ten Haag - Ajax play amazing possession football and play intensive high press. Spurs will play sexy football under him. It's a risk though because the Ajax way is impregnated in him. Can he do it in the premier league ? He could possibly be the right man to head a rebuild. Potter - like Ten Haag young and talented and his Brighton team play great football. Very highly rated young coach but his Brighton team just finished 17th although they did lack a decent striker. Knows English football inside out and you could see him signing young British players from lower leagues which has worked for us in the past. Potter would be very long term and Spurs fans have to be very patient.
Not really true though. We caught up to the bigger clubs using our old model, we then changed it and are now as far behind them as we were pre-Poch and continuing to drop. Leicester have an FA Cup in the bag from their recent successful model, I won’t include the Prem as that was a freak season for them but the FA Cup triumph would’ve never happened without the smart signings of the likes of Fofana, Castagne, Soyuncu, Tielemans, Ndidi etc. We’ll likely have a better chance of winning things by adopting our old model but just improving it by a small margin, IE adding just one or two more players on top of what we’d normally do. One or two better players under Poch’s reign would’ve potentially been the difference between finishing 1st instead of 2nd (or 3rd), winning the league cup or even winning the CL etc. Signing Grealish or Tielemans for instance in the 18/19 season may have done that just that - and Poch certainly deserves part of the blame because we knew he turned Tielemans down to wait a year for Ndombele. They’re the sort of fine margins that cost us in the end under Poch, along with some poor decision making from him in the big games. But ultimately we were so close due to the impressive work we done in transfers before 2016, a number of those players had their last chance to win something in the League Cup final in 2021. Going forward the majority of this squad will be players signed post-2016 and just about all of those haven’t been good enough.
ENIC are the kings of the nearly men. Like the latter day Wenger regime, they will perennially seek to spend just enough to keep the CL gravy flowing in their direction. When it comes to doing more, 'To Dare Is Too Dear', and years of improvement are pissed away. We've won the sum total of 1 League Cup in 20 years. We're about to read the last rites on a very, very good team...again...and left to their management model and Levy's decision making, that's all that we'll ever do. In their reign, three very good teams have been built...and then the family silver has been flogged off because the best players came to understand that Mr Micawber values a balanced book, far more than silverware. The club is first, second and last an investment opportunity. Levy pays lip service to winning stuff, but he won't dare if it results in an annual expenditure of twenty shillings, nought and six. As a result, we can't do. I know that you admire the bloke immensely (or as I suspect, you are him ), but even you must see that we've become mired in a Groundhog Day scenario of repeated failure? No change will come with a guarantee but it's long since time to make really significant changes and try something different and Dare... Levy OUT!
I would hope not to see Italian, Spanish or Portugese managers at Spurs simply because of their style of football. I think we need a Northern European manager. I would prefer to see someone like Potter given an opportunity but also open to Argentine managers who seem to produce teams in the British tradition.
You now have a mindset which is difficult to shift but here goes. Spurs are on the edge of the top 6 and apart from a couple of periods in our history the Nicholson & Burkinshaw times we pretty much always have been. Now it's simply to do with finances. The top 4 this season are the 4 richest clubs in the division and you can jump up and down all you like the only way that will change is with 'lucky transfers' and favourable refs unless we become richer as a club. That is where Levy has made all the right moves despite the pandemic which has halted our progress Spurs overall are moving in the right direction. Calling for ENIC to go is simply to throw the club into the lap of the gods and leaves us open to US owners who only look for profit or serial crooks along the lines of Chelsea or City. If you think that's a good idea compared to Levy who clearly cares about the club despite not getting everything right football wise then I am very glad you do not make the decisions for Spurs.
Yeah that looks to be the case. Strange decision, 4 years building a side that just wins Ligue 1 and now leaves to join a team that finished 9th in the same division. Solid ambition that, lol. Nice does look a lovely place to live though I guess...
I think it’s mainly because Lille are ****ed financially by all accounts and they’re about to either sell the core of their squad or lose them on free transfers, without a lot of money to rebuild. Bits of Nice are lovely and the area around it certainly is, but parts of that city are rough. Same can be said about a lot of the South of France.
Yeah they're about to do a Monaco of 2017/18 I think. Soumare's already on his way to Leicester, Maignan's about to sign for Milan, whereas Botman, David, Bamba, Celik amongst others have been linked with moves too. I can understand leaving Lille now, task is complete so to speak but his stock would be really high after that triumph yet moving to Nice seems a weird move. I've not been to be fair so only just going by stereotypical "South of France is lovely" vibes.
