Dan, if you make a spear tackle you go no argument. That's what Sam Warburton did. The Fench were excellent, they have their problems and they were playing a fired up Welsh team but they kept their heads and defended resolutely. To win you need points and unhappily that is where the Welsh fell down, France got their kicks in and Wales didn't.

I hear Sam Warburton's sending off is being branded controversial, only in that the referee applied the rules. May referee's would be lax in this situation and award a caution. Who is to say that we would have had the same game if Sam Warburton had stayed on, with perhaps a caution.

And a final thought can you imagine the pro-Welsh pain the BBC would inflict on us if Wales had won, doesn't bear thinking about.

I am being devils advocate here, a foul is a foul, the law says that if you lift someone off the ground you are responsible for their safety. Warburton clearly lets him fall under his own steam, no he did not spear him to the ground but he did let him go!

We have a good day. No clouds and not freezing. Rain is predicted for later.

If my terminology is up to scratch a spear tackle is when you make no attempt to tackle the player, but simply ram them. This is not what Warburton did, he simply lifted the player and then dumped him down. Last i checked this was a penalty and sin bin offence. The French player did not land on his head he landed flat on his back. Very similar to the one in the 2003 RWC final against Australia.

He did let him go - but it seemed that was because he lost his footing - but in the end it was a good game and the Welsh had chances to win it

But the other side of that in days before fridges - and yes for some of you - there were days before we all had fridges - the summer "hot" milk on the doorstep was horrible

True - but we're speaking about Scotland here, very few summers hot enough to heat your milk <laugh>

And if there were any, we'd simply be canny and stop the milk delivery until the weather cooled down again!

A spear tackle does not have to end with the player being tackled finishing on the floor.

Anyhow it gives us a bogeyman to dislike in the final France v Australia or New Zealand, there won't be anyone here rooting for our "continental brothers"
