Big mistake IMO. Kane's the real only natural finisher in the squad. If he gets injured, we're relying on DCL to score the goals. Good in the air but not a particularly good finisher. One of Ings or Bamford should have been in the squad.
Cant help but think injuries have cost Ings. Not just because his form dropped after a spell out of the team but Southgate won't want Kane's back up to be a big injury risk
Disappointed for Danny, but fitness was always going to work against him here, Southgate only uses one out and out striker so it was unlikely he would get a game ahead of Kane, Rashford and Calvert-Lewin anyway. Happy for JWP, just need to hope he doesn’t get cut out of the final 26. It actually isn’t the worst squad he has picked, thankfully he has finally dropped Dier. Bamford should declare for the ROI, no chance he will ever make an England squad if he can’t get into a 33 man line up as the second highest English goalscorer.
For what it's worth I actually think Greenwood is a natural finisher, but he doesn't start often enough at United due to Cavani. I'm not convinced on DCL though - he has a good start to the season but over rated I think
No issue with Greenwood being in the squad, he's 19 and being in the squad will do him good for the future. DCL has 3 goals in his last 13 games. Definitely overrated.
Although I’m disappointed for Danny, as long as he stays with us this is good news for next season. He gets a proper break and full pre season now, which I think he desperately needs.
Greenwood's played a lot for United recently to be fair. He's done pretty well and he's definitely going to be a big part of the team in the future, so tournament experience isn't a bad thing for him. He's also another of those players that can play wide or central, like Rashford, so their versatility is a plus over players like Ings. E.g. Southgate seems to love Trippier and Saka, but I wouldn't include them if I was picking the squad. It was always going to be three strikers, with Kane guaranteed and DCL clearly liked. Watkins had a pretty decent season, but I'd have taken Ings ahead of him. That said, providing Ings stays with us this summer, it should be good news for his fitness going into next season.
As I'm always looking for positives, at least Danny's head won't be turned by other players in the England squad. That just leaves Prowsie, but on the face of it, he's too nice to be involved in any underhand 'tapping up'. And he'll probably be in a family room with his mum and dad, so he won't have to mix with any other players, when he's not actually training or playing.
