Thoughts on the Cheltenham races:

2.05 A very strong challenge from across the Irish Sea but I'm going for Paul Nicholls runner Round Tom. Reading PNs column on Betfair they went for this rather than the novices chase yesterday and, although his trainer thinks he is up against it at the weights, he comes here a fresh horse with few miles on the clock, keeps the tongue tie and has Ruby in the plate for the first time. He could actually be the least exposed of these.

2.40 A very competitive handicap chase where a case can be made for all runners, but I am going with last year's winner Edgbriar. Paul Webber's took this off 137 on seasonal debut last year but that pretty much ruined his season as the handicapper upped him to 145 and he was always up against it after that. He is down to 138 today and I think that gives him a squeak as alot of the others are running of career-high marks today.

3.15 Tonic Melysse should take all the beating here. Came to the UK from France with a huge reputation which saw him go off favourite for the Adonis hurdle. He finished 4th that day, 20L behind stablemate and subsequent Triump Hurdle hero Zarkander and on his only other start recorded a facile victory at Ayr at odds of 1/10. I think he could make up into one of the hurdling stars on Nicholls yard this season and ought to have far too much class for these today.

3.50 I am a huge fan of Chicago Grey and he clearly loves Prestbury Park but at the weights today I'm going for Phillip Hobb's Balthazar King. The 7 year-old finished 6 lengths 3rd to Chicago Grey off level weights over C&D a year ago but gets a stone for Gordon Elliot's charge today. He does seem to prefer livelier going and this is probably his best trip - certainly the Bet365 Gold Cup proved beyond him - whilst I think Chicago Grey will be aimed at the real stamina races this season.

4.25 Jeu De Roseau (NAP) makes the long journey south and is in the form of his life. I think they must be very confident to send him for this competitve handicap hurdle and that for me is a tip in itself.

4.55 Lots of anticipation around Zaynar and Toubab here and I will take Paul Nicholls charge to complete a treble for the Ditcheat handler. His hurdles form on goodish going is very good and for me there are still alot of question marks around Zaynar's temperament.

5.30 The bumper looks to be between the top 3 on the card although the Gold Cup winning colours on Ashtown Boy is interesting. I'm going for AP on Jonjo's Amber Cloud who did it well enough in debut and he can hopefully step up on that today.

Everything is on the drift in the Champion Stakes it seems.

    STY- 11/4 from 5/2

Nathaniel, out to 7/1, which is a massive price on his bare form, but I think tells you a lot about the ground and trip concern.

Dubai Prince back out to 8s from 7s.

Snow Fairy out to 9s from 8s.

There are some good prices about some very good horses today. Cracking days racing.

Call me mental but I really like Jimmy Styles today at a mere 66/1

This horse is a course and distance winner and has been carrying lots of weight in handicaps this season. He then ran a fair enough race last time out over the five furlongs at this track (never on terms but ran well enough considering the trip) showing that he still holds ability. I think a return to the form he showed in the Golden Jubilee would make him a much bigger price than he should be and I think this race could be run to suit (plenty of pace in the line up). I think he could be flying at the line.

Hughsey has a brand new BMW to pay for and is going all out on Beneficial Reform, Captain Americo and Allow Me all have great chances he says and will be there or there abouts

Graham very confident of Stormin Exit but so are the bookies 6/4 and he thinks Grand Diamond will place at least

Wilson not got back to me

    Stay frosty

    Lutine Bell 33/1

I quite like the look of Mike Murphy’s runner today, who has been ultra consistent of late (bar his last couple of runs) without quite getting his head in front. He runs for one of my favourite trainers as his horses always seem to progress. After a successful beginning to his career with Sir Mark Prescott, which included 2 victories and 3 placed efforts ranging from 5f to a mile, he moved to his current yard in November last year where he romped to a winning 6L debut over 7f on the AW. Although winless since then, Lutine Bell has performed with a fair deal of consistency since, performing very admirably in most subsequent starts. After being raised to a mark of 92 after the 6L victory, Lutine Bell’s mark had remained static at either 92 or 91, until his effort at Ascot has seen him raised to a mark of 94, which I still believe is very much within his ability.

After producing a below par 2nd effort for the Murphy yard, Lutine Bell produced a decent 1.12L 3rd behind Angels Pursuit and Seek the Fair Land, again on the AW. On his next start, Lutine Bell returned to the turf and ran out an excellent 1.56L 4th over 6f behind the excellent Horseradish, who subsequently ran a very credibly 1L behind Hoof It off a 4lb mark before being sold to Hong Kong. He was staying on strongly towards the finish, showing that a step up to 7f would be ideal, which he gets tomorrow. Perhaps more interesting than Horseradish, was Waffle, who finished only 0.75L ahead of tomorrows selection. Subsequently, Waffle ran an excellent 2nd to Deacon Blues at Royal Ascot, only narrowly failing by a neck as the line came too soon. In correlation with the form of this race alone, Lutine Bell surely has an excellent chance. However, Lutine Bell has run another 3 excellent efforts subsequently.

On 21 May, after a disappointing run at Ascot, Lutine Bell ran finished a good race to finish 1L 4th behind Crown Choice. This was another good run, emphasising the normally excellent standard that Lutine Bell runs to. After this, Lutine Bell was quite luckless from start to finish when finishing 3.31L behind the progressive Dungannon, a horse he finished 0.75L in front of on May 21 with only a 1lb swing in the weights. According to the trainer, “the starter hesitated for a split second before opening the stalls which resulted in Martyn taking the hood off the horse a fraction early. The horse hit the gate and bounced back onto his hocks just as the gate opened” and after meeting traffic, he could not get into contention. Murphy futher cited “We were both thrilled with his run but disappointed as with a clear run he would have won.”

A few starts back Lutine Bell ran an excellent race to finish 0.75L 2nd to Piazzo San Pietro. Lutine Bell missed the kick a bit that day and still did a very good job to finish 2nd. Four starts ago, Lutine Bell again found one too good. Facing one of his toughest tasks to date, Lutine Bell travelled ominously well throughout and for the most part cut his way through the field from deep off a mark of 92. However, he met a small bit of traffic along the way and had to be switched. He finished an excellent 0.75L behind Noble Citizen, who has subsequently run a great race to finish 0.75L 3rd behind Bronze Prince in a big race at Ascot off a 3lb higher mark. Noble Citizen reopposes today off an 8lb worse off mark (including 2lb claim) Macs Power, who has put together two fine efforts, including an excellent 3rd in the Stewards Cup, finished a length behind todays selection.

4 starts ago Lutine Bell put in a rare poor performance at Goodwood when he finished 4.75L behind Webbow over 7f. I’m convinced something was awry with him as he never picked up at all when asked for an effort which is rather strange. He got bumped leaving the stalls so maybe that effected him in some way but. 3 starts back Lutine Bell ran an excellent 1.75L 2nd to Sirius Prospect, who has gone on to win his 2 subsequent starts and who looks pattern class. Richard Hughes was booked for the first time that day and connections clearly fancied him quite a bit. Once again he travelled ominously well but Sirius Prospect got first run on him and it was quite clear that Lutine Bell bumped into an excellent horse.

2 stars back with Hughes booked again, Lutine Bell put in a bit of a shocker when down way down the field at Newmarket last month. He never travelled well as he normally does and although I have no reasons why he performed so badly, he has bounced straight back from a poor run before so I amn’t massively worried. LTO Lutine Bell raced off a mark of 94, and he has proven with his run behind Sirius Prospect that he can certainly be competitive off this mark. Under the guidance of Stevie Donohue at York, Lutine Bell didn’t travel as well as he can do but it was an encouraging enough effort as he was staying on nicely towards the finish to finish 5.5L back in 8th. It showed that he still hasn’t gone of the boil and I’m hoping he can finally win a big handicap as he richly deserves to. He’s back down to a mark of 93 and although I don’t know jockey David Kenny too well, he has ridden 22 winners so he must be decent enough. His 5lb claim will be helpful and the draw in stall 14 also looks a positive. The 33/1 available at the moment is pretty ridiculous and based on his prior efforts off similar marks he could easily land this at huge odds.

Tough day's racing today and therefore I am only backing two, each-way.

I think the slight break will benefit Crystal Capella and she is too big at 8/1.

Nathanial is a ridiculous price for the Champion, considering he has in my opinion the best 3 year old form in the book. I also fancy Midday to place (placed in something like 13/15 G1s!) but don't think she has a chance of winning therefore no bet.

Here's for a good days racing.

Bet365 offered 1/2 on Frankel earlier this morning. I find it a little disconcerting that the bookies might be so keen to lay. That said, the margins are stacked nicely in their favour in terms of liability at such short prices if he was to get beat.

Nathaniel is a massive price I agree MUFC. Crystal Capella is undoubtedly smart on her day but you never know when she is going to turn it on.

Seriously, some fabulous races today. Nathaniel, So You Think, x2 Champion Twice Over, the unbeaten Dubai Prince, best two fillies in the UK in the shape of Midday and Snow Fairy, all locking horns. That will go at some gallop I bet, Nathaniel will make it a test.

The Group 2 fillies and mares is a sensational race, so open. All sorts of form lines cross over in that. Dancing Rain, English&German Oaks winner, Vita Nova, with arguably the best form in defeat, Ferdoos who has beaten Vita Nova, Gertrude Bell who has (quite fortunately) beaten Vita Nova, and Banimpire who has won at Ascot before and placed in all top company this season. It's a 'pick 'em' sort of race!
