No, they were statues of slave traders and like it or not that was a wide spread and legitimate profession at the time. Luckily over 100 years ago British people stood up and said "this is wrong", after a long fight slavery was abolished in Britain and other countries soon followed.
These slave traders got statues built in their honour not because of their profession but because of what they did to and for their cities and local people.
People trying to erase them from history are denying what the world was like and leaving it open for future generations to repeat.

It's funny how it's always people of certain ethnicity who they want to rebrand, but they seem to want to change the subject when the topic shifts to the people involved of other ethnicities, that probably had a far bigger hand in it for much, much longer. Some of them are still at it, as there are more slaves today than were enslaved during the whole trans-atlantic period. That's despite the effort and expense this Country went to to end it, which also seems to be whitewashed out.

It's almost as though the agenda is based on ethnicity...now what could that be described as?
