I've mulled over this question for weeks and am no closer to settling on any one option. In all honesty, the question of Harry Kane's future is inextricably tied to the future of this club. Whether he stays or goes this summer drastically impacts who we'd go for as manager. If Kane stays, we simply will not have the funds to trigger a proper overhaul and whoever is in the dugout will most likely start next season with the vast majority of below par players still members of the squad. In this eventuality, we'd probably need the best coach and motivator we can possibly get to squeeze every last drop out of the current group of muppets, much like Poch did in his last full season. What strikes me most at the moment is that our general work rate, fitness and motivation are down the drain compared to other teams. We need someone who'll make the best of a bang average bunch and that for me is Graham Potter. Conversely, if Kane leaves (I personally think he will if an acceptable bid comes in), suddenly we have a huge windfall with which a proper overhaul can be actioned. And for that, we'd surely want a bigger name manager - especially without CL football on offer - to attract the best we can and use that money wisely instead of blowing it on B-grade journeymen as we did with most of the Bale money. This is where rumours of Conte or even Sarri start to make more sense.
In general I agree with you because it's hard to have an edge in player valuation. But if you give no creedence at all to your internal valuations then it's hard to see how any transfer strategy makes sense except buying a small number of expensive players.
Sky have suddenly latched onto Simone Inzaghi even though not a single Italian source is reporting this, and by complete coincidence the odds are going down as punters are flocking to Sky Bet to chuck money at him being our next manager Seriously, how is Sky Bet legal?
Gasperini has said there's been no talks or anything with us and he's very happy at Atalanta. I'm not sure was ever a legitimate target but it sounds like we can completely rule him out.
The thing that stands out to me is that the board and Levy had no plan B. It was obvious in January and February that JM was not working. From mid December our results were: Palace...draw Liverpool...loss Leicester...loss Wolves...draw Leeds...win Fulham...draw Liverpool...loss Brighton...loss Chelsea...loss West Brom... win City ... loss West ham.... loss 2 wins, 3 draws, 7 lost We also went out of the fa cup to Everton in that run. We were awful in most of them, almost unwatchably boring. Yet two weeks after sacking JM, we are no where near signing a replacement. I think they were going to keep him until the end of the season so hadn't started to look at alternatives but changed their minds when we kicked off about the ESL and thought sacking him would shut us up. I have no idea how no one at the club has been held accountable...and that is ignoring the fact that the decision to appoint JM was a disaster.
"We want trophies!" Spurs appoint the exact manager who will shut those mewling crybabies up "Spurs aren't winning trophies!" Spurs sack that same manager, who those mewling crybabies pretend they weren't demanding eighteen months earlier, and do so at the point where we have to pay him a fraction of what the oft-quoted price of sacking him would be which appears to be why the trigger was pulled when it was pulled Even though several weeks ago I was saying that we should only sack the ubermensch if we had a firm idea of who would replace him and the wheels were already in motion to get the replacement sorted for the second the final whistle went for our last game of the season, and we all remember how using nuance went down with some, there is a point where I'd be perfectly happy to see the club eat **** for a season to see how long it would be before the reactionary dickheads admitted that they need to own their share of the **** we're headed towards But they'd probably demand we sacked Steve Hitchen for some blatantly trumped-up reason like he uses first class rail fares for his scouting trips, as that seems to be what people who demand something and can't accept that what they demanded is a complete ****ing disaster at the moment...
The thing is, with the misery of Levy and ENIC still around, there is around a 80% chance that we will end up with the wrong manager yet again, and whoever the lucky man is, won`t be backed to the required levels. In 18 - 24 months time, people will probably be having the same discussions all over again, rinse and repeat. There is one common denominator in this circus, and that is the ENIC ringmasters. It is time these parasites did us all a favour, and handed over Tottenham Hotspur Football club to somebody with the ambition to win on the pitch, rather than off it.
The other owners in the PL top half generally fit into two categories. Criminals or foreign governments laundering money and actual parasites who are literally milking their clubs dry. Whereas ENIC have reinvested every penny in long term world class infrastructure. While they were at it they delivered our best set of league results ever and got us the CL final playing attractive football.
The timing of the Jose sacking sounds like it was financially motivated if you believe one or two reports. We sacked him when we did because had he won the league cup it would've cost more. In a way it was still stupid even if it did save a few quid because whatever people think/ thought of Jose he's got a good record in finals (12 wins in 15) and he's beaten Pep with us two out of three times. As for the replacement, I'm quite happy to wait a bit in order to get it right. There isn't really a need for a rush as whoever it is likely wouldn't have been available to take over immediately anyway so having some time to evaluate options could be a good thing. Though that said, the club's judgement over the last 5 or so years with recruitment, both players and manager, doesn't exactly give too much confidence they'll get it right.
before Jose’s tenure here, if we were asked which manager would we like in a one off game, a final, most would have chosen Mourinho. If he was sacked to save money it sums up what Levy is about when it comes to his intentions regarding Spurs.
Announce new manager at 2 mins to midnight on transfer deadline day when all the players have been snapped up
It is only a rumour but I wouldn’t be surprised if were true. I didn’t have an issue with the sacking in general but the timing did feel weird with it being so close to a final.
Before Jose's tenure we didn't know he was **** enough to lose a 2-0 home lead to a bog standard Europa league team though. He didn't exactly pull something out of the hat last time we played Man City either.
The last time I checked, there was nothing in the record books celebrating infrastructure, that has been put there purely to add value to their investment, they are, after all, an investment company. Joe Lewis is just as big a criminal as anybody else, if you class tax dodging as a crime, and you do not get to be as rich as he is by not stepping on the toes of various people along the way. And while they were at it, we won the square route of fack all.
but the 2 times before that he did. I still believe he would have been most peoples number 1 choice for a one off game.
This is the hard truth. People don't sponsor nice buildings to improve their own brands success, they sponsor success. Levy has not yet found anyone who will meet his valuation of the sponsorship of your beautiful new ground, why? because it means very little to a sponsor. Win the odd trophy or two (something that many of your supporters seem to disdain) and all of a sudden you are successful and other companies want to be associated with you. Get the core business right first (playing side) and the money will follow.
But to get the playing side right you need money and we have spent quite a bit of it (not as much as some which is what irks some of the posters here) but probably enough to have been more competitive than we have.
