Yeah, looking forward to seeing Rooney getting sent off in the quarter finals against portugal after an ineffective match coming in from the cold.

Can't stand people coming out saying it's unfair and harsh. Why? Violent conduct always equals a 3 game ban.

Reminds me of the 2006 WC when Rooney got sent off then. Everyone just used Ronaldo as the scapegoat, seemingly ignoring the fact that Rooney stamped on Carvalho's balls.

Arshavin? Simple as you can't have double standards. I don't mind if they treat all cases the same and they are all 3 game bans. But you can't ust change the rules to suit. There is not one jot of difference between Arshavin and Rooney and therefore the ban should have been two games in keeping with their previous policy on such incidents. He deserved to go and I'd probably give him a one game ban but I can understand why it has to be two if Arshavin got two. But three just wreaks of the FA vs FIFA/UEFA saga rolling on.

As for trying to blame Capello, its just laughable. I'd have played Rooney aswell. The sending off had nothing to do with his dad! The sending off was frustration at miscontrolling the ball a few times, England losing control of a game they were walking, and a defender pushing into his face with his forearm. He'd have done the same regardless of his dad, its just in him unfortunately.

Shouldn't take him to the Euros when there are so many players who'd do anything to be on that plane AND BEHAVE.

He's England's best player yes but he needs a big reminder that England isn't his playhouse, he's just one of thousands of players who all respect the importance of being a representative of the country.

Agree with most on here saying take a younger, hungrier striker in his place.

So because of one case which you think was wrong then we should be let off too? It's an off the ball, violent assault. He deserves his 3 match ban.
Also to all the people that say it only happens to English players take a look at these:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8043277.stm
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/feb/21/gennaro-gattuso-banned-four-matches
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/may/18/franck-ribery-bayern-munich-champions

People wanted De Jong banned despite he went for the ball, just like Taylor on Eduardo & Shawcross on Ramsey, but Rooney's is much worse as he hasn't gone for the ball he's just gone out to hurt the player. Anyone who says 3 games is harsh needs his head examining.

You're talking about PL games. You have to really go on previous precedents set by the body making decisions at international level. Hence the Arshavin example. I use it simply because it is an identical offence so you'd expect identical punishment from the same body surely? I can't condone a system that just picks and chooses lengths of bans depending on how they feel at the time. Possibly Rooney's younger flashes of the same temper have counted against him but I think it is harsh because Arshavin has done it before aswell. I just like a level playing field.

I don't really have an opinion on what is the correct length of ban. I don't like what Rooney did but it is petulant rather than dangerous. I'd react badly if someone did it to me but I'd prefer that to the kind of tackles like De Jong, Taylor or Shawcross have thrown in. They are just downright dangerous and potentially career ending. Rooney's are often emotional reactions rather than violence. He needs to learn how to play with his head. Those who say you don't want to take his emotion out of him are correct. Messi, Ronaldo etc all play with heart, the best do. But the balance is wrong with Rooney and needs addressed. We have seen how it can improve someones game with Saylor who was guilty of playing with his heart too much.

I just don't think holding Rooney to different standards discipline wise is justified or fair.

Firstly you claim the incident is identical, however you can distinguish between the two incidents, I presume you are referring to Arshavin’s red card for Russia?

If so Arshavin lashed out as the player had elbowed him earlier in the game and was generally giving him stick all game. Whereas Rooney was totally unprovoked in context of the situation, and was merely frustrated at his lack of control of the game!

All this aside precedent in its natural sense ironically is subject to change. Fifa unlike lower courts in the legal system doesn’t bind itself or is it bound by any other bodies decisions, and in fact judges each case on its own merit so how can you complain they don’t follow precedent when they aren’t even bound by it.

Everyone apart from the most delusional and paranoid Man U fans feel its correct decision so why are you trying to find anything to defend him?
(this is not an attack on you I’m just intrigued why your defending him)

i agree with everyone saying he should have a 3 match ban, but anyone who thinks he he should be dropped from now on your kidding yourselves, hes one of our only players who can make a difference in games, id even think about taking him to the euros and making him an impact sub if we get through tbh, i cant see us winning without him uptop...

I don't claim the incidents are identical, I know they are. As for reasons for the reaction, to be honest it is not important at all. The action is what they are punished for and they committed identical offences. As for the rest, what you are talking about is an unjust system. Identical offences in my opinion should carry identical punishment. To me that is common sense and I stand by that. As I say I'm not interested in talking about the rights and wrongs of what he did, I'm simply commenting on inconsistent rulings. You are entitled to your opinion but I believe those who think treating identical incidents differently are plain wrong.

Identical is a strong word and you are using it very widely... They are not identical as Arshavin has mitigating factors where as Rooney doesnt (in the context of the game doesnt).. Also you are wrong to dismiss motive! A guy who genuinely goes for the ball and injures someone is a accident and deserve the normal ban for the card, a guy who goes out to break someones leg deserves to be banned for life, are you saying they should get the same?

An unjust system is a rigid system where the results are looked at and then given a sentence which are printed correspondingly on a table.. I've done a essay for Uni on the advantages and disadvantages of precedent.. It just about works in Law however football is a completely different situation!!

To be fair you have to consider precedent but its not the be all and end all and all factors should be taken into consideration!!!

To be fair I personally wouldn't take Rooney but if we got a group with say Poland, Greece and Bosnia then yeah I would take him.

Not at all I'm simply saying if the ruling is a two game ban for kicking out at an opponent in frustration, then that is what is should be given. If its a three game ban then that is what should be given. What I don't agree with is treating identical incidents differently. You see them as different, I see them as identical.

Both are challenged by the opponent in a physical manner, both kick their opponent. One gets three, one gets two, its just wrong for me. I'm only asking them to apply the rules they have laid out. Its not what the rule book says but how they are applied. You could argue all day about what ban should be given. Level playing field for all is the only just system for me. Inconsistent refereeing in the heat of the moment is frustrating, inconsistent rulings with time to consider is unforgivable.
