Looks like JWP is the not606 POTS but has he also scored the GOTS too?

I can't be arsed to go through a list of ten candidates so just name your favourite goal and see who gets the most.

Off the top of my head there was Danny's instinctive and sublime lob against Liverpool, Redders' run and great finish at Bournemouth, Oriol's stunning volley against WBA, Minamino's cheeky cool finish against Chelsea, one of a multitude of JWP free-kicks and Che's netbuster at Sheff Utd.

I'll have a think about my choice, over to you...

Ings against Villa away is another one. Top finish that. Certainly in my top 3.

    My top 3:

    1. Ings - Villa away
    2. Ings - Liverpool home
    3. Adams - Sheffield United away. Adams just edges Romeu for 3rd.

One of my favourite goals this season for sheer comedy value: Adams v Chelsea away. :)

Ah yeah, Blackmore and Whispering Dave's commentary on that is quite funny.

Gotta go with the JWP free kick against De Gea in the 2-3 loss at home.

De Gea thought he had the near post covered, Prowsey was about 25 yards out considering the angle and yet De Gea ended up crumpled into the side netting and a little bit injured.

The Ings goal away to Villa looks much nicer, but the ball is moving, he has momentum, and there is an element of luck. With JWP it’s a dead ball, and it was pure skill and precision.

I don't think there was much luck in that goal at all. The way he made space for himself was class and the finish was just exquisite. Harder to pull off than a free kick into the top corner IMO.

It's an amazing goal (Ings'), don't get me wrong, but he is not typically a long-range shot-taker, so I think his main aim is just to get the ball on target, anywhere towards the far post. That gives a relatively large area to aim for. Add to that the element of surprise on behalf of the Villa keeper, who had about 0.5 seconds to prepare himself for the shot, and who was positioned far off his line.

In contrast, JWP had to get that ball precisely into the right spot; a couple of centimetres to the left or right and it wouldn't have gone in. Plus, De Gea was positioned exactly where he wanted to be, and had all the time in the world to prepare himself.

JWP scored an equally good one against Shrewsbury in the cup, but I just think the added pressure of it being a league game, against Utd, and with De Gea in goal mean it is just that little bit sweeter. Shame we couldn't hold on for the points.

EDIT: Just watching the replay again, and the ball takes the faintest nick off Rashford in the wall (I think), in which case I take it back. Give it to Ingsy, Prowsie was the lucky one! <laugh>

Just trying to think of any team goals with lots of movement and passing and none are jumping out at me, I tend to favour those type of goals but the finish might not be so memorable.

    So I'm going;

    1. Rashford (own goal) vs Man Utd
    2. Ings vs Villa
    3. Adams vs Sheff Utd

I think that JWP's second free-kick at Villa was technically perfect to get it up and down so close to the penalty area although I think Mings might've helped by not jumping?

Surely it's got to be Armstrong against Newcastle at home to secure the win that put us top :emoticon-0169-dance:emoticon-0102-bigsm

Yeah, if Mings had jumped it would have got him in the face.

To be counted as a great goal, it has surely to mean something in the context of the match. Philosophically, can a goal scored in a lost game be great? Maybe, but for me, scoring the winner after coming back from being 2-0 behind at home is what football is all about. All of which leads me to Nathan Redmond’s 66th minute volley against Burnley at the beginning of April.

One of Le Tiss' goal-of-the-seasons in the mid-nineties was in a 2-3 defeat away to Blackburn. I think he said it's his fave one ever. But yeah, I agree that context is important.

Ok, I've plumped for this one because it is a World class finish, he just knows where to put the ball perfectly without ever looking at the goal once...

It also was the winner in a memorable victory over the Scousers.

    Love this one :emoticon-0152-heart
Open play will always trump dead ball for me as it features a unique set of circumstances where dead balls vary less and can be practiced more easily

Not to take anything away from JWP as he is the best at what he does and we get results from his goals

One exception is that free kick by the Brazilian full back Roberto ? (EDIT: Carlos) from 40+ yards out a number of years ago (memory letting me down here <laugh>)

Context v Content is difficult to evaluate
Bobby Stokes would Win the all time contest for the first but not the second
