That meeting that preceded the PL was 1990 and organised by Greg Dyke from LWT. He invited the chairman of 5 clubs, Liverpool, Everton, United, Spurs and Arsenal. David Dein then engaged with the F.A.

The entire league signed up for that agreement and it was sanctioned and lead by the F.A. To claim equivalence between that and a closed shop, founders for life, completely secretly negotiated and signed agreement between the 12 clubs involved in the ESL is laughable.

I get what your saying Tobes but just cause it was sanctioned by FA doesn't make it right.
The basic concept is/was the same
Really Greedy bastards trying to shaft not as greedy bastards at its basic level, does nt matter how we wrap it up
Anyways its been a great debate
    Loved reading it

i have however changed my mind
Think the ESL is a great idea....

I'm in favour but there.are issue that need to be addressed.

    A) under the table payment. We all know city did it 100% we can deny it to suit ourselves but there is zero way they say with the reputed wages for so long and never.lot a player and pep was not asked about payments in.kiddle east for othing.

    B) image rights. Theres a reason why players go to some final clubs like in usa and harvest put aside image rights. Clubs cannot be allowed put.money away for players for a final collection in low tax region.

    C) agents need to.be capped too.

I would be all for an overall club cap and a max player cap.

I completely disagree I’m afraid mate. You have to put things in context. At the time of the formation of the PL football was ****ed, crumbling stadiums, poor facilities, etc.

There was virtually no live footie on the TV, and the game was massively under exposed. The league and TV companies saw this and the collective opportunity, which lead to a symbiotic relationship which has seen the game benefit from £BN’s and the TV companies (notably Sky) build their platforms off the back of the new and exciting packaging of the top flight product.

The lower league clubs cry about not getting their ‘fair’ share of the spoils, but 40 clubs have benefited from the PL cash directly in the 28 years it’s been in existence, and the EFL gets over £300m p.a. as a virtual gift from the top flight.

If they got given more, what would they do with it? Oh yeah that’ll be spunking it on wages and transfer fees, as we’ve seen how this works.

I heard one Chairman talking about the Govt insisting the PL bail out the lower leagues during COVID, and whilst he had sympathy for most of the sides in L1 & 2 who largely operate within their means, his sympathy didn’t extend to the Championship where virtually every club over spends as they desperately try and outdo each other to reach the PL. as he put it, did the Govt expect Tesco’s to bail out the corner shops when they were coining it in during the pandemic?

You can argue that this goes back as far as the Trevor Francis transfer.
I think now is the watershed moment, you are either the football business fan or a football the sport fan. No going back nearly all the clubs are involved, as Tobes has pointed out **** goes through all the pro clubs - every single one of them and it is being highlighted by this latest episode.

easy solution remove all money, no pro’s playing and you can only represent the club where you live Radius of x miles
If only choice of one club tough
Ftr i know it cant happen. <laugh>

went to my local team the other week, chatted to a few of the players and fans. Turns out that they were not local lads, they were being paid cash in hand by the club ! They from all over lancashire, this is ridiculous.

The next day on the Sunday my U10s girls team played in the cup semi final and won 10-1
After the game the league chair came over to ask how we had got on
After we told him 10-1 he said
Oh thats good, if you had lost you would have still gone through as at least two of the girl playing for the opposition had been pulled in from another club just for the semi
    Wtaf
So it really is every level of the game

so it appears its humans that are the problem

We have to see it for what it was and is.

It's a means to make money and a means to get out of a saturday at 3pm and be it be with mates or bring yer kid or whatever you personally want as a fan.

People can dress it up how they like but I boils down to that. Recreation for the masses cos we like it

Football is rarely on at 3pm for the fans now. Hasnt been for 30 years?

Why do we play at 12:30. For Asia. Why do we play at 5:30. Americas.

There are more masses having their recreation at home than there are enjoying their afternoon off out at the match.

At this point it is no different than going to the cinema or any other thing you watch.

And yet we lambasted businessmen cos they fail to see it as something it is not any more. Perhaps we are targeting them for being stupid in how they dis it more than what they did as the cl is now a super league in all it name lol

We've seen fans of Arsenal, Liverpool and United push to get rid of their owners but are City and Chelsea fans doing the same?

Erm city and chelsea are the heroes of football between them they took down the ESL abs those nasty evil other clubs.

Was funny, saw statement from chelsea supports trust saying that needs to be changed at boardroom level... but nothing about the owner. Apparently he doesn’t get involved...

Haha that's what I was thinking. I may have missed it but there aren't huge calls for City's and Chelsea's owner to go. It seems morals and ethics go out the window when the owner pump billions of money into the club without a care in the world.

    Perez (Real Madrid president)...

"There was one club in the English group that did not have much interest and that could infect others"

"That club, which I am not going to say their name, signed a binding agreement. I am convinced that if this project does not come out, another will come out"

"I'm sad and disappointed. We've been working for years on this, looking to see how to make things better from a football and economic point of view"

    https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/eu...s-one-premier-league-club-was-never-convinced

Obviously read it for yourself, just shared a few bits that grabbed my attention.

Not surprise they've been working in it for years but that's straight from the horses mouth!

They're not heroes. I get what you're saying and seen you say it a couple of times now. Them pulling out started the crumble but they still signed up in the first place.

They're slightly ahead of the other four in credibility but Diego Costa is more honourable then all of them atm!

Yes, as they’ve never been allowed to broadcast at 3pm Saturday because it might affect crowds at the lower league games. The late Saturday night slot was considered a no, no, due to traditional Saturday night TV, albeit they’ve dipped their toe in that pond now.

Man City don't have any fans and Chelsea fans are generally ****s (although the latter did hold a protest against the ESL tbf)

That was the point I was attempting to make earlier. Before the PL the game here was massively under exposed. We saw more live Italian togger than we did English.

What TV did was extend the audiences well beyond matchgoers and our own tiny island.

What’s also been remarkable though, is that the demand for tickets has continued to increase, so it’s not been substitutional. The match times are a pain at times, but you have to keep it in context, as without TV then we wouldn’t be watching the calibre of player we do, in the surroundings that we now have.
