If you read back to 31st march UEFA delayed their announcement of this as they knew full well the clubs were not happy. the had decided to plough on without agreement and guess what the day before their big announcement the big cubs put out their own system. this is purely a power battle. the sign off on a proposal was made for show and you have PSG as the club who broke every rule in the book as now uefa's poster boy (for now)
This is definitely a Sherman driven idea imo. The fact that Joel Glazer is heading it up says it all. They’ve missed the point of football completely imo. Merit. A new league where 15 of them can’t be relegated and 5 will gain access by some undefined measure of domestic success. So what happens with those 5 every year? Are they rotated annually or do they have to avoid a ‘drop zone’? What if all 5 finish head of 5 of the founding members are they relegated anyway? What kind of a league is that? The entire idea is flawed at its most basic level. People want to watch the big European clubs playing each other in the knockout rounds of the CL with something tangible and real at stake. Not in a league system where they’ll be doing so every year irrespective of performance.
i don’t get the one league with teams playing a % of teams in that league. They should just copy the super league format, and effectively have 2/3/4 leagues (depends how many clubs involved) and have the top 2/3 go through to play offs
When this reared it’s head again I’d have agreed with that completely, it’s a show of strength and nothing more than a means to an end. However, once the announcement came out, my position altered, as I think they’re actually committed to this rancid idea. The Sherman’s have sold the idea and cutting out the middle man i.e. UEFA makes sense to their accountants. If they’re going to back peddle at some point, it’s now a long ride back imo. They’ve overstepped the line here, and there has to sanction irrespective of the outcome. As these clubs owners can’t continue to believe that they’re bigger than the game itself and continue to try and manipulate the game’s structure to cover their own mismanagement.
Must admit one thing that makes me laugh is people saying how this will ruin grass roots football... 1) how? And 2) as if grass roots football is in any kind of positive state at the moment anyway? Can’t get worse surely?! haven’t played league football for 5/6 years now but when I did pitches were ****, refs often not turning up. Changing rooms existed at about half the grounds you played at. They’re not kidding anyone that grass roots is at some sort of all time high at the moment.
Not sure will backpaddle, but can see some sort of ‘compromise’ being made, but what that boils down to no idea given the clubs wants guaranteed involvement, and everyone is against that.
It'll be interesting to see how they propose to iron out those wrinkles, though there's no solution I can foresee that would change my mind. It's the brain-child of someone who either has no grasp of the cultural and historical significance of the game (Yanks) or understands it but doesn't give a **** because they want the dosh (Spaniards).
Exactly! Teams are already going bust, grassroots receive sod all. Also - lower PL clubs spent ridiculous amounts of money over the years. Are they anymore competitive? The likes of bournemouth outspent Liverpool not too long ago and look where they are loll
there's something in the background where IMO uefa knew full well this lot were not happy but probably didn't realise they were this advanced on having financing etc. Uefa didn't listen or decided on their last warning to push on and dare them to have a strop. I honestly also think that since the ultra corrupt types were purged, the guys coming in behind like this little jumped up lad just didn't have the fingers on the pulse. I can;t imagine platini and blatter would have not got wind of this **** a lot sooner and headed it off. I think its over simplistic to say the yanks this and that as the spanish are up to their necks in it too. I think the greed is all round. the fact that uefa have lost 12 clubs without even breaking up the club a bit more suggests they really didn't think this was coming. In the end it still comes back to this, the higher the sanction the bigger the push back will be. After all. If people choose to commit league suicide in italy, spain and england then this super league can simply say fine and add another level on top of their proposal which is designed to run alongside the leagues to supplant the entire league. We have to see that 12 clubs is enough to have a league with 4 matches between sides (11x4= 44) no issue plus play offs after. so irrespective of the line crossed (and I agree with you on it remember) Its now crossed and the choice is to push them to go even further or try to pull them back in.
Leicester came from L1 to the PL, nearly got relegated in their first season, then won the thing and rightly gained entry into the game’s most prestigious club competition. This kills that dream, that’s why it’s a bucket of ****.
Jimmy is being facetious. any club could be made look like they out spent liverpool in one season. look at 2019/20 bourneouth spent 45mil and sold to the value of 31mil we spend 4mil and took in 33 look at 2018/19 obviously totally different situation bournemouth spend 77 and take in 18 but we spent 161mil and took in 33mil its swings and roundabouts all prem clubs have money and you can find a season or two that a "regular" LFC season with about 20mil net spend can be made look small. esp if klopp buys no one.
You want everyone to cajole these renegade owners with offers of ‘compromise’ after they’ve plotted to do this? If every other club and association did that, then they know exactly what to do next time they want their noses to be ahead of the rest at the trough. It’s completely the wrong stance, they’ve put this out there, and are claiming to be committed to it. The onus is now on the game to either stop it be whatever means possible or to let them go. Allowing them to in essence win, after playing a hand like this, is just plain wrong.
Have to admit that some of the self-righteousness of some of the journalists' and clubs' reactions is beginning to grate. They've actually got writers on The Daily Mail (rightly) bemoaning the lack of promotion/relegation/qualification to this league who were perfectly prepared to null and void last season to save West Ham and Villa, and keep Leeds down in The Championship. Principles, eh?
its a bucket of **** but..... hang on. I can remember heskey donating 100k to leicester to try keep them afloat. However king power and the billionaires bought leicester in 2010. lets not pretend leicester are quite the example of a dream without money backing. they are an example of what money does same as any other example but they are the perfect example of opportunity and merit and building long term. but they are still money not fan ownership which has been lauded about this week. they are an example of "good" owners yet if offered would they have gone for this? who knows.
Both you and Jimmy are talking about transfer fees rather than the amount actually spent in total as a club and that is the figure that matters in this comparison .
Actually, whether they spent more than Liverpool is one thing. But the point I'm trying to make is that these 'lesser' teams already have had significant money to spend to improve their squads who really challenges for the top 4 and the title? Look at Palace, Wolves, Newcastle etc. Are their priorities to break into the top 4? I don't think it is ...
I have never had any interest in the opinions of hacks or any other self-interested party. I'm basing my opinion on how I see the future of football shaping up. Too much money has sickened the game over decades, VAR has mortally wounded it, imo - this just provides the coup-de-grace.
And this goes back to a point that Tobes made previously. Maybe take this money out of the game and let clubs be more responsible with their money and develop organically.
