The Euros. God knows who will be playing for us tho. Hope they have all got their blue passports sorted.
well there ya go, i was surprised to hear on sky sports news that sky have distanced themselves from this...wonder then, if it is american companies gunning for the rights? so far, not one manager or player has come out in support of this, mainly saying they prefer things as they are...i am now actually hoping some clubs do try to break away only to find the backers pull out due to worldwide protests and those clubs then have to suffer some kind of expulsion from the leagues, with players banned from representing their countries (possibly) they will want out the door asap, be one way of all but ensuring greed does not take hold again.
Been reported that some matches will happen in dubai, shanghai and new york. Was always possible to get more exposure. Watch for usa teams to play friendlies then guest games then its suddenly a world league in 10 years time. None of this superleague plan is good but we should not be surprised. Investors want dividends and the pandemic has made them worried but also confident you can play matches anywhere, anytime and millions of people will give them money in order to watch it.
The whole thing is a cartoon so probably Disney will be interested. Real Madrid and the 5 dwarves.....
NFL has 30+ teams that span the entire area that plays the game too. This is more like the ****ing AFL which is a joke of a competition.
Had a half dozen super league for/against polls pop up on YouTube yesterday afternoon - including one from Sky Sports. The results were all approx 16 - 18% for and 84 - 86% against. So Sky must simply have seen these numbers and realised there would still be a strong demand for Premiership, EFL and Euro Football but not a great demand for the Super League. I don’t know if they, or anyone else, have thought about another aspect of the Italian and Spanish clubs that are involved - they don’t have glowing records when it comes to bribery and max fixing, so what opportunities along these lines when your club is going to be permanently secure from relegation? Could a HM Govt and EU ban on all forms of betting on the Super League be introduced as an anti-corruption measure?
One of the other things that these yanks need to consider is that part of the games appeal (EPL etc) is the relegation/promotion aspect and qualification for finals. A closed shop is what they have in every major sport in the US already and it's the difference that is appealing, well at least to friends and family of mine over there anyway.
Tell you ****ing what, that would be some league. Those two nations produced far more than their fair share of talent given their size.
Interesting article this. It includes an admission that the ESL know it will damage the Premier League. But they really don't care. The people behind this really aren't interested in sport. BBC News - Why Super League plan makes financial sense for top clubs https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56800611
The Real Madrid President has said they are doing it to save football!! There you have it then...Hallelujah. Lying greedy bas****s !!!
Football has been going on for over 150 years, its not broken, so nothing to fix, as many have said, these are just lying greedy b astards and need to be taught a lesson.....of course it won't happen as the footballing authorities don't have the balls to go head to head with the major clubs. I hope all the fans of these breakaway clubs who are screaming this shouldn't happen, don't buy season tickets...again, can't see that happening. But kick them out of every domestic league and competition should be a bare minimum and no player of these clubs can represent their National Team
Makes me wonder if 'Big Picture' would have just been a preliminary enabler for this ESL - ie You can't kick us out of the Premier League because now us top clubs have enough preferential voting rights to veto any such suggestion!
Sky's position in this is interesting. They're apparently not involved in the move to break away, but their contract with the Premier League was entered into on the basis of these breakaway clubs being featured week in and week out. If they leave the PL,presumably Sky will see their product as being devalued, and would be asking for a refund.
It absolutely wasn’t though. The Premier League was happening with or without Sky, There isn’t, and never has been, a fixed quota of games for the top clubs, they are selected based on viewing figures from previous season and projections for advertising revenue. I work for Sky, Sky LOSE money on sports subscriptions and the model relies on businesses picking up the tab via advertising, hence they show more games with clubs with a bigger reach. There isn’t an agreement to show this games more, Sky’s contract allows them first pick of games and they therefore take the bigger games. I read all the time that Sky ‘ruined football’ when in reality they jumped on a moving train. We had one game a week on ITV beforehand. They didn’t take the game away. If there was someone who changed the game it was Peter Kenyon at United who tapped into Far East audience and got a leg up that way, the rest followed. It just went too far to quickly, and clubs reacted quicker than others.
I guess eligibility for a refund might be dependant upon the basis of any expulsions from the Premier League - would the clubs be expelled by Uefa? HM Govt? Both of these might be declared as force majeure, with the Premier League responsible only if they are expelled by the other clubs.
I wasn't in any way criticising Sky. I was reflecting that when Sky look at how they sell their product around the world,it would presumably be easier to sell..and therefore more money generating for them...if they are able to show matches featuring Man U,Liverpool etc. than it would be without them? Is that not right,or am I up the creek?
