I hope you are right but I genuinely don’t see how they can All they will do is drive a bigger wedge that results in a firmer breakaway
I wouldn't go out my way to look for our results but can't help but feel you'd have a look whilst looking at other results
If it happened, I’d wager that you’d still follow them. I would. I wouldn’t be a fan of it happening but I’d still be a fan of the club. You can’t simply turn off after 50 years. I couldn’t anyway.
That's what I was getting at. Right now (and for several years before) I'll maintain I won't watch, but reality often turns out different to what you anticipated. None of us have experienced our club making a **** move like this before.
Not tried posting a link to tic-toc before but it's on topic so here goes... https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMe91BBHA/
Not 1 of the 12 clubs responded to the invitation to the emergency meeting of the European Club Association today.
So sounds like they are working on basis this is a mid week league. In theory replacing the CL abs they will continue to play in the national leagues... in that case, not as drastic as initially thought... but who knows. Wonder if gonna be w huge compromise somewhere in the middle
Big money involved.... These solidarity payments will be substantially higher than those generated by the current European competition and are expected to be in excess of €10 billion during the course of the initial commitment period of the Clubs. In addition, the competition will be built on a sustainable financial foundation with all Founding Clubs signing up to a spending framework. In exchange for their commitment, Founding Clubs will receive an amount of €3.5 billion solely to support their infrastructure investment plans and to offset the impact of the COVID pandemic.
This just seems like what they wanted the CL to be. A bit of a closed shop but allow a few other clubs to join each season based on performance, not what we all thought was going to be which is a replacement of the actual league. Given the money involved, can see why the clubs would rather this than the CL which in theory is what it would be replacing. Be interesting see what the leagues do, they can’t afford to lose their biggest teams, and the teams don’t want to leave, so compromise and let them have this separate comp mid week and scrap the CL?
But the league becomes static because of the money the "Super League" appears to generate. The chosen few get more money than anybody else so their little self proclaimed elite stay the same. Not what sport is supposed to be.
More interesting what UEFA and FIFA do. On that tic-toc video I shared, it said UEFA & FIFA had released a joint statement saying any clubs forming a European league would be banned from their competitions and they players wouldn't be allowed to play internationals either. Edit; sorry, it wasn't Fifa, it was the English, Spanish, Italian, etc FAs.
What I see is... The clubs were complaining that the CL was out of date (and uefa have been massively profiting off their backs whilst they get relatively little in return (also that uefa are underselling the value)) and that missing out was costing these clubs too much (mainly to keep up with the PSGs and Man Citys). So uefa came up with an idea to expand the CL, which was **** as all it did was extra games into an already packed season. This is all a power play to get uefa to bend to the big clubs will uefa and fifa have made this mess by selling out to take competitions to Russia, Qatar and by making Western teams travel to Kiev and Baku. And by allowing ffp to fail.
True. From a business perspective, can see exactly why they’d want to do it. And football is a business these days. put it this way, if you owned a company and you were able to get a 3.5bn grant plus guaranteed entry into league that will generate x amount each year, be silly not to take it. Compared to the CL which you may or may not be able to enter if you have one bad year and suddenly lose £100m in revenue.
Yup. I can see some sort of compromised because I don’t think uefa can afford to lose these clubs from their competitions but the clubs want more money and some guarantees about involvement
