Good Morning. It's Thursday 15th April, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Hay reveals Bielsa v Orta fireworks

Athletic journalist Phil Hay has revealed that Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta regularly clash, and when they do, it's fireworks! Whilst their passion for the club cannot be questioned, both regularly will not back down

It’s not always sweetness and light, though. Bielsa and Victor Orta, the director of football, are famed for the ferocity of their arguments but the bottom line is that they respect each other and understand each other. The key for Leeds is making sure those bonds don’t weaken!

When asked about Leeds spending this Summer, the former Chief football writer for the YEP replied:-

I get the impression Leeds will have a decent transfer budget again next season and they seem to know which positions are the priorities — left-back, attacking midfield and cover for Kalvin Phillips in the holding role. Orta has been working on some of his targets for a few months now, so they should be well prepared for the summer.

COVID-19 isn’t making things easy because it’s been squeezing cash flow for more than 12 months but there’s no suggestion Leeds will need to significantly tighten their belt. That’s important because, as good as they’ve been and as well as they’ve acclimatised this season, I don’t think they can be complacent in assuming the strength and depth of their squad is adequate. The best clubs keep on strengthening intelligently.

    Raphinha sidelined

Raphinha is likely to miss Leeds crunch ties against Liverpool and Manchester Utd after sustaining a thigh injury in the closing stages of the Manchester City game last Saturday.

To rub salt into the would, the heavy challenge from Fernandinho went unpunished whilst earlier in the game, Liam Cooper was sent for an early bath for his (reckless) challenge on Jesus. The referee initially booked the Leeds skipper, and as Andre Marriner (the man in black) had seen the foul, and dished out what he thought was an appropriate punishment, the game should have continued. VAR's interference was always going to lead to a red card. If Marriner had been brave, and stuck to his guns, it would have been seen as sticking two fingers up at VAR).

Leeds don't play Liverpool until Monday, so Raphinha does have some recovery time. Unfortunately, the Brazilian is due to be sidelined anywhere between 1 - 4 weeks depending on how he responds to treatment.

Rodrigo is expected to be out for a similar amount of time.

Players reactions following Cooper's red card

The Latest Leeds Utd podcast has given us an insight into the players reactions following Coopers sending off, and Bielsa's subsequent decision to sacrifice Bamford for Sruijk. As Leeds fans were pulling their hair out as Cooper trudged off the pitch, Bamford's face showed disbelief, then utter contempt as the number nine flashed up on the substitution board.

This is the conversation on the pitch between Bamford, Ayling and Cooper:-

AYLING “I saw you [Bamford] staring at the bench when Pascal was getting ready to come on,”

BAMFORD “No, do you know what actually happened?” “Coops had just been sent off and he was obviously arguing a bit with the ref, and when he decided to go off I said, “Coops, take your time, walk off slowly, give us a chance to get ready for this set piece.’ And he was like, ‘yeah cool’.

BAMFORD “Then I’ve got back in position and Bill’s gone past and said, ‘It’s you.’ I said, ‘What’, looked over at the board and I couldn’t quite see because of the sun. I thought it said eight but we haven’t got a number eight and then I saw nine and went, ‘No way.’ “Then the manager shouted, ‘Yes Pat, you’ and that made my head go.”

AYLING “To be fair to Pat, every player thought it would be Tyler. Tyler was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t fancy chasing around Man City for 50 minutes’.”

    Morning all :emoticon-0148-yes:

Too much speculation about injuries and nobody can possibly know until Bielsa’s presser. The same people pumping injury claims are the same people telling us we are buying Messi. Yes Raphinha had his thigh strapped but that could have been ice under there to reduce swelling. He got a dead leg and they are usually minor things, but yes it could be muscle damage due to impact. As for Rodrigo we have gone from slight tweak in training to a 4 week absence? We dont know until we do.....

The bit that caught my eye about the sending off was Aylings final comments about everyone thought it would be Roberts coming off but when it was Bamford “Tyler said yeah I dont fancy chasing City around for 50mins”. I think that sums up some of the issues with Roberts because he cant keep the pace up and slows down and ambles back too much. I think he has explosive pace from a standing start but like a sprinter his race is run after a short sprint, and he takes too long to get over it.

    Good morning,

So Cooper got sent off for a challenge because it was potentially dangerous and could cause an injury but didn't and Fernandinho wasn't sent off because his challenge that wasn't dangerous has caused an injury.

How accurate do you think the Ayling / Bamford conversation is? Have they said this themselves?

Bielsa says Raphinha and Rodrigo may be fit for Monday, may be fit, but much better than both out for 4 weeks as was stated in the media

    Afternoon all....

I don’t believe we’ll sign cover for Phillips, what’s the point having someone who’d play maybe 4-5 games at most? Much more likely we’ll see Llorente used as cover if required.

More likely to sign a player who can play anywhere in midfield but mainly as an AM to replace Klich or cover for him, and also be able to cover for Phillips

McCalmont played as a KP for an u23 season. Now he appears to have used his loan out to become a free-scoring all-round midfielder. If it's only 4-5 games a season, I'd consider playing him to add to his education.

Re the Phil Hay comment about fireworks.
Bielsa is Argentinian Orta Spanish, both nationalities are well known for their effusive manners when speaking.
Also I dont think Hay speaks a word of Spanish they could have been discussing anything.
As for the onfield chat- a total non strory., happens in every game.

Whats it called Este? That latin passion. Look at the way Orta carries on in the stands, even Directors box, thats passion for football. Add in Bielsa and you will have a cocktail for something explosive. Think back to when Pep was getting started and asked to visit Bielsa in Argentina to pick his brains. The visit was scheduled for 2 hours but lasted nearly 3 weeks. Non stop football tactics and thinking..
...... Bielsa recently said Victor Orta was one of the special minds in football, so deffo no fall out just huge respect
