When I was 17 I joined WREAK VALLY FC. It was my debut game, I came on as a sub, up front in the middle. Playing with much older people & most of my family watching I wanted to make a good start to my time with WVFC so I was trying as hard as I could. Then came my big chance, I was free all alone in the middle the ball came in from the right, perfect weighted pass that beat the last DEF & the GK & as I took a swing at it all I managed to do was to swing at thin air 3 foot from an open goal with the ball going straight throw my legs & out for a throw in in the corner. My older brother never let me forget it. I guess you should of been there but..
The mighty Wherwell FC. It was the whack on the head that made me think I could watch the replay later
So would I Elland. No, never as such played competitively again. Took a year before I could walk properly again, & have spent the last 25 yrs cross country running instead.
Not possible Elland. It was an accident & I didn't lose anything as such. The Office still sent me abroard to work some while later, & I wouldn't ever be able to prove that I missed out on a career in footy, despite having recently joined a local non league team. On reflection, I'm glad I never made it. All those late night parties, having to fend off the attentions of WAGS, doing time in rehab. after yet another late night drinking & gambling session. Life outside of footy ain't too bad afterall!!!
Don Robinson bless him. I cringed when he said on the telly that we would be the first team to play on the moon. I know we sometimes play 'out of this world' footy but ffs.
