Alan Hansen believes Liverpool fans can provide their side with an added edge when they take on Manchester United on Saturday by recreating a European-style atmosphere inside Anfield.

The Reds legend feels a vociferous Kop can act as added motivation for Kenny Dalglish's men as they go in search of a third consecutive win in the Barclays Premier League.

"Another potentially important factor is the Anfield atmosphere on Saturday," Hansen wrote in his column in LFC Magazine.

"For me, the atmosphere at the Champions League matches, when we were in it, have been different to the atmosphere at Premier League games at Anfield.

"The noise levels against both Chelsea - on more than one occasion - and Arsenal were sensational and completely different to how it is for league games against them.

"Because Liverpool fans had been waiting for such a long time for such big games the noise levels were cranked up and it made a difference.

"I was at the Bolton game at Anfield in August and while, with all due respect to them, Bolton will never be the biggest game of the season, the atmosphere was electric.

"I don't think Manchester United's players will be frightened by the noise levels on Saturday, but Liverpool's players could be inspired by it.

"If you're playing in that sort of atmosphere and you know the crowd are right behind you it definitely gives you an edge.

"On Saturday, come 12.45pm, Kenny would love the crowd to be in full voice and for Anfield to be bouncing because when it is there is simply nowhere better."

I think its a point that is fine for hanson to make, though rather obvious cos its this way every time.

One point i think utd fans can reasonably make is this sort of thing just points to the bias hanson shows towards us. Yet of course mr neville on sky will get called all sorts of nasty names and have to try to be impartial in spite of it.

thats fair enough to my mind.

I think hanson is right that utd players are not going to bottle it no matter how noisy a crowd we are, but i think the expansive debate ought to be around how our new players will react to it.

I think suarez will love it. I don't know if it will inspire the others or not. I think most all of what we bought will be mature enough to take a boost out of being at home as well. the important thing is not to get carried away and dive in in the first 5 mins to a bad tackle or something and bar adam i think the rest will be fine.

They can make a difference, but limit the cruel taunting to Giggs and Rooney.

Totally agree, give our players positive cheers leave the taunting to the utd fans and that will fire our players up and make them even more determent to win.I do think it will be a tight game but think (hope) the 3 points will come to us

giggs will get a bit when he warms up, thats only natural and rooney will get it whenever he misses the target. thats only natural too... its not like they don't get the same everywere they go of course.

then owen is another case in point.

overall nobody is going to condone but in the end we know its going to happen same as it happens at old trafford to us.

Giggs and Rooney gave Liverpool fans a stick to beat them with and if it were a Liverpool player at OT, I would expect the same thing. Ferguson was a bit hypocritical when he condemned Liverpool fans for hurling abuse at Owen, when he praised Man United fans in 1997 for throwing abuse at Paul Ince. Paul Ince didn't come out of Man Uniteds academy, Owen came out of Liverpools. Thats where the difference lies. Onlly Sol Campbell has ever done what Owen did, and Spurs fans have every right to throw abuse at him.
