Training probably helps younger managers more than older ones. You are never going to be able to train a dinosaur, this isn't aimed at you by the way Luv nor your dinosaur comment earlier. What I'm saying is if you have a company that has embedded racism or it's prone to regular discrimination, no amount of training is going to fix that. Lot of HR structures today are at the bare bones, especially in companies that have regular cost cutting exercises. So it's wrong to think in some cases, 'that's what we have a HR department for' - because it probably don't exist to the strength that some people think. I can remember my own football club getting done for racism, not that it was racist, but simply because it failed to dot the i's and cross the t's when required to do so at management level. If you apply a rule to one person, make sure you are consistant with all employees, I'm shhite hot on this type of stuff. The reason these things end up at tribunal are due to lack of training, and a poorly invested in HR dept. Finally don't be guided by the dinosaurs that tell you well I've done it like that for years, because eventually it can come back and bite you big time (this is not aimed at pieguts). As pieguts said, you can lead a horse to water but...
My company have unfortunately decimated the HR function and we now have an automated system. I’ve not had to use it yet but I’m sure it will be great!! I also do understand that the organisation I work for has many layers of corporate legal departments and as such we can run any investigation, including disciplinary matters pass them. I’m certainly not trying to belittle Tobes or anyone else. The conversation did go “off piste” though and that was largely down to a poorly constructed answer to Tobes first post. However, I get sick and tired of the old “we haven’t been trained” argument, in my own organisation. In addition, I don’t think I’ve ever completed a management training course and thought “wow” I didn’t know that. I have also been extremely lucky to work for a guy who was an absolute genius (IMO) at people management. He could literally sell sand to the Arabs! The one comment that irritates me more than anything is the “we’ve always done it this way” bollox.
You definitely need training to do the job but there is no substitute for experience. First job after Uni was as an assistant manager in a decorators merchant ... threw me in at the deep end and the factory lads gave me a torrid time for the first few weeks. Good experience and certainly broadened my horizons. Was nice that even the biggest nutters in the warehouse gave me a warm farewell when I left after 3 years there. Left to go into the financial services profession and got manager after a couple of years. They put me on a week training course for new managers where they try and go over all the situations you might come up against as well as employment law basics. Biggest eye opener for me was over formal complaint cases. The Big 4 accounting firm's will bend over backwards to avoid employment tribunals because of adverse publicity and the impact on Investors In People ... they will cough up a 5 figure sum to settle out of court instead. First I heard of this appalled me ... what if the complainant is a complete waste of oxygen? ... makes no difference. "We don't go to tribunal". Now oversee a team of 5 managers, all specialists in their field. Just had to deal with one of them getting a 'hostile' exit interview from an employee leaving interview with HR. Hardest part of the job is the non technical stuff.
My company is the same, as I expect many others are, around settlements. Avoid any bad publicity at pretty much any cost. For me, the worst experience I’ve had is a coroners inquest following a fatality. I was interviewed as a subject matter expert with regards to permit to work. Having to explain that the deceased person hadn’t followed site rules was extremely hard when all his immediate family were there. No training can prepare you for that.

Publicity is a biggy as you rightly allude, hence why a lot of companies now will have contracts that cover social media. I've also seen those contracts put into action and lead to the dismissal of employees. Also in some jobs it's not just about protecting the business but protecting you. To ensure you can't be targeted by criminal activity that could put you or your family at risk, through careless words. After all, if cops can kill a guy over a $20 bill...well I think you get my point. Also some jobs may have unpopular outcomes, especially if you work for the government, we've even known members to leave this forum so work and social don't collide. Anyway I've digressed! Soz.
I use a laptop that has a mouse, I can never get on with those pads. Right click, copy gif, paste to forum is how I post gifs.
Completely agree that there’s no substitute for experience, and you can’t teach experience. What you can do is share experience though, particularly painful experience where it’s gone pear. I’m a big advocate of that and it’s something I do a lot with my managers, as we can learn from others mistakes as opposed to making our own. The corporate avoid tribunal / court at virtually any cost used to wind me up when I was younger and worked for a PLC. As seeing us roll over for completely scurrilous claims to avoid litigation went against my instincts. However, it was mostly just maths, make a claim go away for a few large as opposed to spending possibly a larger amount on legal fees to prove ourselves right, whilst also avoiding any potential bad publicity on the off chance we got torched in court. So pragmatic, but frustrating.
Watching the golf and haven’t looked tonight’s offerings. Can I assume from the comments, it’s wall to wall tributes to The old fella on the mainstream channels?
We are only just slowly coming out of a year of covid, so I'm not listening to any wall to wall news of the old man that died today. I'm not being disrespectful but thousands of loved ones have died, the grieving is for the Palace, so I'll ignore the new channels for the day to let them get it out of their system, but if they intend on going on with this for days or weeks they can fook off.
