Maybe those names appeared after a few Dutch got drunk and lost after winning the Battle of Medway or whatever the cheeky victory was?

Curiously that is not a title that she actually possesses. Indeed, there is no reference to England at all:

Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

I like the story about Manhattan. It means something like the place were men fall over, as it was a trading post between the natives and the visitors, where beads were swapped for spirits.

One bunch of settlers bargained with some natives, and struck a good deal to buy the whole Island for some spirits. The natives walked off swigging away contentedly, and the settlers were happy, until they found out the natives they dealt with were from miles away, and had sod all to do with the Island at all.

Yes. I believe the word "Yankee" comes from the Dutch? Anyway, I read quite an interesting book many years ago about NYC, it is spread over a few hundred years. Starts off the red Indians and then the Dutch, British etc and all the stories intertwine. Can't remember the name of it though. It is a mixture of fiction and non-fiction.

Not that I can recall, but something, maybe a family heirloom kept on turning up in different eras. When I say it was fiction an non-fiction, I mean the likes of Otis(the guy who invented the lifts, was at one of the parties, so fiction but with real people throughout it. I think Lafayette was mentioned in one of the earlier chapters.

****ing annoying me that I can't remember the name of it. I will maybe try and find out later.

The "Darien Scheme" was a bit of a lark. Scotland set out to colonise it's own bit of North America.

What could go wrong? Everything apparently.

I am not sure where New Holland gets its name as it is barely more than a hamlet around a couple of docks. With no ferry anymore, it is mostly timber from Scandinavia that is landed there now.

The area of Southern Lincolnshire that was known as Holland was an area of mostly fens and marshes that were virtually at sea level. So it has that in common with the area of the Netherlands as far as topography.

However, I think that the Dutch name was derived from their language whilst the English region derives its name from Olde English. The district of South Holland survives but what could have been considered North Holland became part of the Borough of Boston when Holland ceased to exist.

Boston is fairly near Market Deeping? When I say fairly near, I mean within 40 miles or so?
