Well I watched the ITV coverage and it wasn't great. The racing was destroyed by the dust cloud that was kicked up. Once someone was out in front the others had no chance. Plus they didn't explain the 'crazy race' or the other one enough to know what was happening in the heats. The intro at the beginning was something like IF you are joining us for the first time..... How could we not be watching the first race for the first time? They didn't really explain the hyper drive, not much interviewing of drivers, team managers - Rosberg was there! They did manage to interview Lewis though!!!! Looked like McLaren's Zac Brown was there but under a mask I may have been mistaken.
Seemed so much like a missed opportunity. Next race is again on sand so not sure that will be better? I was hoping for more cars in the final race. There was very little info on the cars, the charging system, the ship etc.... They don't seem to have spare cars so if you crash too bad then you are out!!

Overall I was disappointed but it's only first weekend so they can improve.
I might check out the BBC coverage to see if that is better.

    UPDATE
Just started iPlayer coverage and they have explained things so much better or I missed it on ITV.

I have to agree with you, I watched the BBC coverage, which I thought was informative. The sand turned it into a drag race to the first corner, then it was follow the leader. I was surprised Jenson did not use the 4 second power boost mode on the drag race start in the Crazy Race. It has potential, the course for the timed events was at times like a ski race, but sand destroys the close car racing that might have been possible in the three car racing.

Just watched BBC and it was better, they actually gave info about car - mentioned Williams making battery etc and adjustable torque split etc. Then explained the final races - why call it crazy race when it's exactly same format as all the others.
Yes I agree sand destroyed things. Hopefully we will see better racing next. I do like the fact that the track is only actually the gates and they can take any route between them.
    Looking forward to next race.

Promising, although not much in the way of wheel-to-wheel action. I watched the final and after the drag race off the line, the cars seemed to settle at about 20 second intervals. Was there more than 3 cars in a race at any point over the race weekend?

Only 1 at a time for quali. Only 3 max on the final day. With such a wide 'track' I was surprised that they only raced 3 as a max at once.
The sand trails messed it all up, I am surprised that they chose that venue for first race.
They also don't seem to have any indication to viewers when they are using the boost button. So we have no idea if the great starts were due to driver skill, grid position or using the boost.
Think they have some work to do but could be great racing plus you don't often see 'off road' racing on main stream TV.

They screened everything here, on terrestrial TV (the shows that explained it all etc), so that was good.

I enjoyed the qualifying runs, but the races were easily foreseeable garbage - a drag race to the first corner, and then it's game over, with the trailing cars unable to see anything. As Kristofferson said (after finishing his lap with a huge lead) "I feel sorry for the guys behind, because after the 3rd corner it's not really a race any more".

They'll have to change the format for any future desert events.

    Some things felt gimmicky...
    • anything that involves fan votes. Thank God there isn't an "Extreme Kardashian" team.
    • "Crazy race" - the marketing team trying to distract from the fact that it's basically like the football play-offs, offering a place in the final to one of the teams that weren't fast enough to qualify in their own right
    • Introducing the teams in the "Command Centre" (before the final races) - Layla-Anna Lee trying way too hard to generate excitement. It sounded like Robot Wars, and not in a good way.
    • I guess they're trying to make up for the fact that they're racing in remote places without any crowds.
On the plus side, I think the desert race was always going to be the worst one. The others should be better, and if they can become less gimmicky, it should be good.

I know that all seems very negative, but it's just frustration that the race format was such a predictably stupid idea. I genuinely hope Extreme E succeeds and grows.

Edit: I really liked the idea of having 'gates' but no track limits. Shame that the teams didn't try to experiment more with that.

in respect to qualifyig for the final, the crazy race sounds a little bit like the way rallycross was/is structured. everyone gets to a final, the worst go in the C final, and the winner of that goes on the back of the B final grid, and the winner of the B gets on the back of the A final. So if you are fast, but had terrible luck in the heats, there was still had the chance to win the big race.

A bit like that, except the winner of the crazy race gets to line up alongside the others on the front row (there's only one row).

As you say, sometimes it will 'rescue' an unlucky qualifier. I won't mind that.

I just know I'll pissed off when the opposite happens. Somewhere along the way, it seems I've become Victor Meldrew.

The penalties were extreme in their own right, 75 seconds for speeding.
Makes me wonder about the penalties in F1, should they be more extreme? A 5 second penalty may not change the outcome whereas the gain from the misdemeanor may still be extra points.

Not watched any of it yet, but thinking of giving it a whirl later today. Worth a watch?

It was interesting to watch but they have a way to go on the racing aspect of things. I think it is worth a watch, maybe a highlights program would be better although the highlights I watched failed to explain some things.

The qualifiers were the best, the race itself is not a race beyond the drag start. That may change circuit by circuit. The qualifiers give you an idea of the daring of the drive. The race itself needs to be rethought.

Have some of it on while working. It's a little convoluted. Might be better treating it like rally and just having timed stages.

Not able to pay particularly close attention to it though, so probably missing a lot of what's going on.

I was of the same opinion. The next race is sand as well, I believe.

yeah, I don't understand why overtaking off track and not returning the place is now supposedly only 5 seconds, Button and Hamilton both got about 30secs for it in the past.

I think F1 has always reserved the biggest penalties for safety infringements? Speeding in the pitlane is usually a stop-go penalty from memory. I guess that's the appropriate analogy here?

I think Max suggesting it would have been 5 seconds for the overtake on Hamilton was false, it likely would have been more - particularly had he ignored a request to give the place back.

I might be wrong but my understanding is that before Spa 2008 there was only a gentleman's agreement that passing off the track was a no-no. Drivers would always hand the place back.

The irony at Spa was that Hamilton did hand the place back but was penalised anyway. IIRC it was 25 seconds, just enough to drop him to 2nd behind Massa who was never in contention for the win anyway, Raikkonen having crashed out of the race.
