What am I playing at? That looks a stupid bet but it's done now and I will consider myself very fortunate if that returns anything Your fault Swanny, making me look at Southwell
Ron, the only greyhound I think I ever knew was when I was a kid, and it was the great Ballyhennessy Seal. He was owned, or part-owned by the owner of the famous freehouse pub, "The Swan" ( ) at Thames Ditton (if you wanted to impress a date, hire a row boat at Kingston, and slog it up to Thames Ditton for drinks, etc) I think his name was Archie Mathews, and was a good friend of my dad. The locals around Kingston and the Hamptons really had it off as they had backed the dog silly ante-post for months before the actual race, 30th June 1945, at the White City Stadium. He went off at evens-favourite SP from trap 1. Remember well the riotous partying (after all those dark years before) after the Seal won. The Greyhound Derby was one big deal once upon a time. Here's some blurb from Wikipedia: ..................... Ballyhennessy Seal was a famous racing greyhound during the latter part of World War II and shortly afterwards. He is regarded as being the one of the leading racing greyhounds in history and won the sports ultimate prize, the English Greyhound Derby. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1945_English_Greyhound_Derby ..................... Note: See the owners are given officially as a Mrs. F. Stow and a Mr. Vivian, but I know damn well Archie Mathews was a part-owner (at least) of the dog, couldn't possibly be otherwise! Everyone in the area always referred to the Seal as "Archie Mathew's dog"!
Sorry, Ron, didn't notice my typo 'Southall'. Many thanks for correcting it! What a daft typo by me, good grief!
I do remember Pigalle Wonder, Ron, but not the 1958 Greyhound Derby itself, as I had already left England and had just arrived in Calgary, Alberta, in June of that year. Long journey, sea and train, the old way to emigrate! Just in time for the Calgary Stampede, although I was too busy looking for work to see any of it that year. Made up for it later though.
