A sustainable substitute for cod and haddock - it's a good tasty fish that used to cheaper than the other two, now the chefs have gotten hold of it and made it mainstream the price is only going one way.
While you're there, you aught to nip on to Chants Ave and try Dundee Fisheries. Prob Frydays in Anlaby for me.
Muck fish with muck sauce, haddock only from chippies, thank you very much. Oh, and don't forget your shandy to wash it down with!
Were going to the on at the other end of Chants...i live nearer Dundee but prefere the one near the bridge, change in routine for me as i usually go on thursdays but doing a Fish, Beer n Football day on Friday instead.
I'll be interested to know what you think about it, I'm not a big lover of Hake, much prefer a Dover Sole or Halibut?
When I was on the fish market, Hake was a similar price to Halibut, but Coley was a cheap fish, very often used as Cut fish in fish and chip shops.
I agree about halibut - the chefs and foodies call turbot the 'king of fish', personally I've never tried it, that being the case, I struggle to imagine anything tastier than a simply cooked halibut steak.
Hake wa similar price to halibut? When was that? Must have been quite a while ago. Wife doesn't take much interest in these things but really enjoyed coley when we had it at home. No fish is cheap now unfortunately.
Just reminded me, my dad had a bakery and fishermen often brought in some fish for him. Often some nice pieces of halibut. My dad said in later years I had said oh, no not halibut for tea again! How times change. Wish I could have it as regularly again.
