You said you were an atheist, so why are you getting so worked up about it? When people make outlandish claims about supernatural beings, the onus is on them to prove what they say, not the other way round.

It depends upon what country you live in and the influence of religion in that country, a lot of the time. Theists often attempt to suppress science, free expression and free will when they're in the majority. The current attempts by the Texas education board to 'teach the controversy' are a good example of this.
By the same token the USA is a deeply religious country yet has been at the forefront of scientific research for many years and has lead the free world too.

The USA is more like a continent than a country, though and it has a constitution which promotes the separation of church and state. Unfortunately some people are trying to get round that.

Religion hasn't actually caused that many wars, but it has been used as an excuse by those in power to justify said wars to those actually on the front line.

That is why I responded, if I had read the thread of which you speak then doubtless I would have argued the same way, intolerance is the issue in question.
