Reaction when wearing a Saints shirt

Discussion in 'Southampton' started by Richisontheboat33, Oct 12, 2011.

  1. How do people responsd when you are going about your daily business in a replica Saints shirt? This could be at the supermarket, walking around town, playing 5-a-side (football like I do).

Do you receive comments / compliments / otherwise?

Around Berkshire where I am located, there are alot of plastic Chelski and Gooners fans who don'tsay much. The Reading fans I know seem to be in awe of us.

I don't wear it around in public, only on game days, but even so I'm out and about before the game so I'm seen in it then. Sadly my pre-match route takes me through Fareham so I receive a lot of comments then (a personal favourite of mine being, "you've got some balls to wear that here you ****ing scummer ****!") but normally nothing.

You think you've got it bad, I live in Fareham !! I only tend to wear my shirt on match-days but now the weather is setting in. I wear my scarf in town. Actually, havn't had many problems, on match-days I tend to get a quite a lot of things thrown at me from cars, invariably fruit and some of it is quite nice especially the apples and oranges !! I give them the middle finger back or wave with a dreamy smile on my face....COYS

I wear mine occasionally at weekends and received no adverse comments from anyone. Got a few people come up to me talking about how well we're doing. I live just outside Bognor Regis and the number of Pompey fans wearing their shirts has noticeably declined in recent years. I did take my car to Kwik-fit for an MOT and the neanderthal mechanic called me a scummer after seeing my car sticker so I've never taken my car back to them since so they lost business. I get more reaction from the car sticker than I do wearing my shirt. It's amazing how many Pompey fans drive white vans and every time I see a white van driver gesticulating I know who he supports without having to see the masses of Pompey stickers emblazoned all over it. Judging by the state of some of them they would probably fall apart if they took the stickers off.

I only wear footy tops when playing/coaching footy. I did however meet someone in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia wearing the Saints away kit from last year.

I hope you told the company you were called 'scummer' by one of their employees. I would, if it was meant as an insult rather than just as a bit of banter.

Back in 1998 I had to go to Portsmouth to pick someone up from the cross-Channel ferry port; the car I had then had a Saints sticker in it. Of course, I didn't give it a second thought until half a brick bounced off my car, thrown by some caveman skate.

When I lived in the North East I would definitely never wear my Saints shirt/scarf on an evening in Newcastle for fear of being mistaken for a Sun'land fan.

No probs on the shirt front, Poole is a stronghold of Saints support.

    Which is nice............

Don't wear a saints shirt, never really have to be honest.I always give people the thumbs up on the motorway if i see them on the way to an away game in a saints shirt, dunno why, just feel a bond haha.Talking of away games,my nephew, mum and girlfriend wear saints colours but if we drive up and park we always make an effort to hide our colours just in case of any trouble, most teams are ok but there are a few numpties about who will give you abuse if they see u in the rivals shirt, best to avoid it.Heard a story once of a boy and his dad shopping in pompey and the boy had a saints shirt on (bad idea i know) anyway the boy got spat at and abused, what a pathetic world we live in sometimes.

I usually see a few people in the local supermarket wearing Saints tops. I usually give them a polite nod.

I always remove my Saints monkey from the car when I drive via Portsmouth..no point in taking risks. Once I was walking with my small son wearing his Saints shirt and a neanderthal yelled scummer right in his face. he was upset and scared and wouldn't wear it for a while.

I want one of those big silver saints badge stickers for my back window,it's tinted so it would look nice but i go to pompey at times and fear a smashed window, shame we gotta live like that just because we support rival teams.Anyone got the sticker and if so is it something you can remove and put back on?

Visited my mums half of the family in Leigh Park last x-mas for a few drinks and wore if for a laugh. Saw a few locals and not one of them said a word to me.

Flipping the question on it's head. Have you ever seen many p*mpey fans wearing their ****ty blue shirt in Soton before and what sort of reaction did you or someone else give them?

I live in Belfast so most people don't even recognise it. If I'm in the bar some Championship fans would come and speak to me, I've met one or two Southampton fans in ten years.
