Sad that quite a few of the truly naturally mercurial/gifted players of that era (Best, Greavsie etc) seemed to also succumb easily to the vices (drink, gambling etc) . I don't know if tis the result of the greater pay they got wrt the supporter base ( 'I never had the money before to do it' etc) + some innate mental aspect that made their ability so effortless, but there seems to be the basis of some pattern there.

It seems totally bonkers that Carlton Palmer gained more England caps than a talent such as Frank Worthington.
Carlton Palmer got more England caps than Matt le Tissier and they were playing at the same time! He also has the same number as Scott Parker and more than Ray Kennedy, Steve McMahon, Les Ferdinand and Gary Mabbutt.
He got more than Worthington, Bowles and Hudson got between them! with a fraction of the talent but he did run a lot
It's hard to compare eras (he got more than Dixie Dean), but picking him ahead of some of his contemporaries was ludicrous. Do I not like that.
It has to be taken into account that the England managers in question were an ageing Sir Alf, Don Revie and Ron Greenwood. Cloughie would have given him a go.
