Detectives in Glasgow are investigating sectarian threats made to a young Rangers player from Northern Ireland.

Seventeen-year-old Aaron McGregor, a former Gaelic footballer from Limavady in Free Derry, signed for the Ibrox club in June and the Catholic teenager has since been subjected to a torrent of abuse on an unofficial Rangers fans' website.

In one post, a commenter apparently stated they could not wait for McGregor to receive bombs and bullets in the post.

The comment came after Celtic manager Neil Lennon, players Niall McGinn and Paddy McCourt, and high-profile fans of the club, including Paul McBride QC, were allegedly sent packages in the post.

Mr McBride has spoken out in support of the teenage footballer. He told STV News: "It is scandalous. He is a young boy who happens to be Catholic, who happens to want to play for Rangers.

"He should be allowed to do so and he is getting abuse and death threats from his own clubs fans. This is exactly why we need legislation to deal with "The Rangers Problem". The SNP have proposed it, other parties are dragging their heels and they should now look at this as an example and see what can be done to stop it."

In Limavady, there has been support for the teenager across the community, while his father Michael has thanked everybody at Rangers FC for their handling of the situation.

In a statement, Rangers FC said: "The club condemns all forms of discrimatory behaviour and we will not give this unofficial website any further credibility. We are delighted to have signed such a promising young footballer."

A spokeswoman from Strathclyde Police said: "We are aware of the comments and the matter is being looked into with the appropriate action being taken by officers."

Why can't these idiots put football first? Thats like me sending Arsene Wenger death threats because the french were occupied by the Nazi's during the war, and didn't help us out too much.
