England sleepwalking into a dictatorship? https://www.cityam.com/government-plans-to-change-mayor-of-london-elections-to-first-past-the-post/ And of course, the Tories prepared for protests against this by introducing their Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill first...
Patel's quote really grates - “transferable voting systems were rejected by the British people in the 2011 nationwide referendum - therefore local elections should be changed to reflect this." A referendum that had a mere 42% turnout - hardly rejected by the British people.
What I think of her is unprintable. A pity we don't have 2nd Amendment rights because we're going to need them at this rate. And before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, that's a joke. I do not advocate gun ownership a l'America.
It is quite frightening to see government ministers telling giant porkies at every opportunity. Tonight Hancock was at it again. Journalists called him out straight away, but he doesn't care. Yesterday May who was hardly a liberal Home Secretary gave a speech in the Commons saying that the new laws would take away basic rights of free speech from the people. She then voted for it.
Like Moscow Mitch across the pond... States that trump incited the insurrection then votes against impeachment. The world is turning ever faster to ****.
Seems that Sunak tried his best, but the civil servants said no. More corruption at the highest levels. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1373690390067474438.html
Happens all over... .but this present round based on emergency powers is particularly galling.....jobs for trusted mates
Just how desperate must this be, brought about by a so called leader who doesn't want to lead. It is amazing that so many people think that Bolsonaro is doing a good job. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/03/21/...ation-medicine-patients-intl-latam/index.html
Not normally, no - but this was a case of a former PM lobbying to protect his own financial interests, and happened well after he had resigned as an MP. I'd hazard a guess that that is rare for any party, but will happily stand corrected.
The First Minister in Scotland is cleared of misleading Parliament by an independent inquiry. It is a pity that the Prime Minister cannot be subjected to a similar eight hour grilling.
As expected, she was 'found guilty' by the parliamentary committee by five votes to four - a split which followed party allegiences - three of those five having appeared to have spent the entire duration of the inquiry on Twitter telling all and sundry that she was guilty before they had even listened to her. Whether or not anything comes of that is debatable, given the exposed bias of the committee members - as she has said all along, she will be placing her future in the hands of the Scottish people on the 6th May as it's up to them to decide rather than a small group of individuals. I think the Tories are still pushing ahead with their VONC tomorrow, but I don't think anyone is worried about that - they simply don't have the numbers. Interesting to note too the reaction of some in the media and on social media about the James Hamilton QC decision. All of those who were confident that he would find her guilty because "he's a QC and knows what he's doing" are now busily gnashing their teeth in anger and lashing out at him. Accusations abound of his hitherto unknown bias towards Ms Sturgeon and the SNP, his wikipedia page has even been hacked and altered to claim that he was actually an SNP member, and some are even claiming that "he's not a proper QC". What's possibly fuelling their anger even more are the polls - they are consistently showing not only majority support for Independence, but also that Holyrood is likely headed for a 19 seat pro-independence majority on the 6th May - in fact one announced just now shows a 21 seat majority.
"Boris Johnson says it's 'too early to say' why UK has Europe's worst covid death toll. But we know why - he left our border open, repeatedly locked us down too late, let covid rip through care homes, and we had no tests or enough PPE. He got vaccines right, everything else wrong." Just had a long telephone call with my greatest friend in Dorset. Even he who believed Johnson when he said nothing would change with Brexit, now is starting to believe that he has been sold a pup. He is now starting to question just why Cameron called a referendum in the first place. He realized that Cameron was behind some dodgy dealing over Greensill, but the Telegraph had given him little detail. I was able to help. My friend has two brothers who live in the south of Ireland and are laughing at him for believing that Johnson is a good person to lead the country. I quite understand that no one wants to seem foolish for backing such a failure, but unless you try and keep up, look at more than one source for your information, you cannot argue a case. A classic example of not believing facts, rather than what you want to believe is the Brits in Spain who haven't bothered to register and now find their 90 days is up at the end of the month, and have to return to the UK. Idiots!
I hope that Ross is better running the line than making political decisions. No support for his decision to call a vote of no confidence. If he wants to make a name for himself maybe he should be asking pointed questions in Westminster about members of his own party. Why does the PM repeatedly mislead the Commons? How can a Home Secretary be found guilty of abuse, then let off? If you want to make a name for yourself Douglas you will not do by being a lapdog.
