Murray was the voice of general motorsport long before he became the voice of Formula 1. I can remember watching hill climbs and motocross on Grandstand back in the early 1960’s, and his quirky knowledge of petrol-based competition was always a joy to listen to. Much later on, after he had cemented his position as chief F1 commentator, he formed a wonderful partnership with James Hunt, his polar opposite in terms of personality and lifestyle, but who complemented Murray perfectly until his untimely death. Hard to imagine a world where people in fast cars race each other without Murray Walker being there to see it, and make unintentionally hilarious comments about it. A couple of my favourites: “This would have been Senna's third win a row if he'd won the two before”. “There are seven winners of the Monaco Grand Prix on the starting line today, and four of them are Michael Schumacher.” RIP Murray Walker, you absolute legend.
So much apart of my childhood and adulthood. Brought up in a auto sport mad household. RIP Muddley Talker.
“We now have exactly the same situation as we had at the start of the race, only exactly the opposite.”
only 66 too ☹️ What a fighter. The night he beat Alan Minter at Wembley was incredible and that amazing era of him Sugar Ray, Duran and the Hitman Hearns....
His fight against the Hitman was one of my favourites, and of course the controversial defeat to sugar Ray. One hell of a fighter.
He legally changed his name to include marvellous so the media had to call him that and give him the credit he deserved. RIP GOAT
