Phillips is getting all the plaudits but I really thought Kabak was the better one of the two last night. Kabak was good throughout both in the air and on the ground whereas I thought Phillips struggled with positioning in the first half. Certainly got better in the second half. Either way, they will do a job for the time being. Phillips's stock will have risen immensely and we should be looking to sell and maximise that value. That is the problem with our selling at the moment - we cant be sentimental like we were with Origi, Wilson, Grujic etc. Phillips will do good in the bottom half of the table / Championship.
Fact lallana wasn’t given a new contract shows we aren’t sentimental. Klopp loved him but knew was time for him to move on

Maybe sentiment is the wrong word but we need to be better at shifting the deadwood and not holding onto our assets for too long.
It's human nature to fill in blanks when we don't have all the information. We're all prone to this, I'm not excluding myself. How we fill in the blanks says things about how we think. On the one hand FSG are criticised for being tight-fisted, but at the same time the club is accused of hanging on to players it should have got rid of for reasons other than pragmatism. This doesn't make sense to me, I think there are too many assumptions.
It’s also just not as simple as getting rid. have to find someone willing to buy. then get some sort of price that makes it beneficial to you. what if they want % of wages paying? then you have to get replacements in. Our squad isn’t big enough that we can afford to get rid of 5/6 squad players without replacing them. Even if they don’t play, you need them to bulk up squad in case of injuries plus even for training against etc. so if you can’t get the players you want in, why even bother contemplating moving others on
This is the point I'm making. We don't know the reasons behind the club's decision making, so we can all speculate - but our speculations are based on our own ideas about what we would do, not on any objective reality.
My point is that hanging on to deadwood could cost less than getting rid and buying new players. Hence if the owners are tight fisted they could also go for the former rather than the latter.
Then that is simply pragmatism, which was the point I was making; that no element of sentimentality, or whichever equivalent word one chooses, drives their transfer policy.
So essentially we shouldn't question the club or have any opinions, and instead we should just accept the way things are?
At the end of the day, we're spending a lot of money on wages on players who simply don't contribute to the team. Keeping them on our books is just a waste of money - and it's not like we were going to get rid of all the players in one go. We've had some of these on our books for years. I know it's not easy but surely we can 4-5 players who dont play a single minute for us and bring in 1-2 who would be far more useful?
