Arsenal DO have money to spend, Wenger refuses to spend it. His loyalty to completing his dream of having an Arsenal team, built by his own hands is causing us the problem we have. Our stadium debts are manageable, they always were, and they were ring fenced - qualification to the CL would not hinder us paying off the debt. So please can you all stop using the stadium debt as a reason why Wenger hasn't or won't spend money. the debt was set to be long term, we have no reason to pay it off quickly but we have been to save on interest payments. But if Wenger wanted money for players - like when he wanted Arshavin - money would be given to him. It suits Wenger's plan for development to look like he can't spend money because it isn't there but that is absolute bull crap. Wenger MUST spend money to keep us competitive, in every position on the pitch we are far weaker than we were 10 years ago, even 5 years ago.
I don't think we have the money to spend on players like Mata, taking into account their wages, otherwise we would have signed him.
Well, I thought we had 100-120m left in the TPA fund? We delayed on Mata ( so I'm told ) and eventually Chelski came on board with their big fat chequebook. Actually if only we could clear out our deadwood, we would have even more money available but sadly, no one wants those players either...
WE seem to take too long with negotiations. Mata was a top target for the big clubs, we don't need to be going for the Matas, but you can't tell me we can't compete with the Liverpools and Tottenhams when it comes to signing players.
I'm not saying we can't. Personally, I think we should be aiming higher than the Spurs and Liverpools' of this world.
We should be and we do - and have been achieving that for a while, but with the players we have now we cannot compete at a higher level and we can't compete with Man U, Man city and Chelsea for players so that pushes us in direct conflict with Liverpool and Tottenham for players.
