You won’t be alone in those thoughts Nass I am sure - a very shocking set of events and in the middle of a pandemic which has made us all feel upside down at various points of the past year it is no surprise to feel confusion or lack the same excitement.

Better times ahead mate <ok> Hopefully we are inching closer now :)

    Thanks PN

Bit crass of RP to have articles behind a paywall on this topic.

What sort of punishment do people think will be enough to appease the public?

I was thinking 15-20k fine and 6-12 month ban, for all that i believe worse has been dealt with more leniently, you have to take into account the scale of the damage to racings image and also to set a precedent on something that hasnt happened before. I heard 6 figures mentioned on a podcast but that seems excessive. Imo the vast majority of the damage is already done to elliot and his staff, their year is over, Cheltenham down the drain, losing most of their top horses and possibly the horse of their lifetime in Envoi Allen, owners and sponsors deserting and reputation in tatters, a fine and ban will only be the icing on the cake.

Not sure if people have seen Bryony Frosts Instagram or her first days with Black
Corton at home but if you want a reminder of why horses and racing matters to so many then it’s well worth a watch.

A bit of a rhetorical question at the moment of course, but how do we think the crowd at a racecourse would react if they saw Gordon Elliott saddling a runner?

depends where it is. In England I’d expect vitriol.

I think there has to be a ban, a fine is all well and good but I don’t recall ever seeing a fine of more than £20k, which let’s face it he’d pay off with one Grade 1 winner. The punishment has to be punitive, otherwise where is the deterrent? The ban itself has to be more than 6 months otherwise it will only affect the off-season when he’d be taking things easier with the horses anyway.

What fine and ban would you suggest, Princess?
Let’s face it , Elliott has lost many top horses and the respect and standing within horse racing circles. He’ll be vilified by millions of horse lovers, and his family/relations will suffer by association.
The effect on him personally will be deep and permanent. He may not even stay in racing.
Whatever fine and ban are imposed on him, they will be minimal in comparison.
His ‘crime’ was to show total disrespect to a dead animal.
Given his position, he’ll pay the price for the rest of his life.
Personally, despite action being needed by the racing authorities, he has already passed a heavy sentence on himself, whether unwittingly stupid or not.
The authorities should act quickly. To prolong an investigation would be odious.

Lets not forget this happens with horses all the time, they move yards. Look at Gigginstown move from Mullins. It’s awful for those involved but it’s not like it’s unprecedented.

Hundreds being laid off where I work because no one is flying. Unavoidable due to COVID yet what Elliott did was totally avoidable. As someone posted the other day, his position comes with responsibility just like the CEO of a company or indeed a catholic bishop.

Yes, and it will have a detrimental impact on his team. That is very sad and undeserved but you can’t spare a person punishment because of its impacts on others who rely on him.

they do in courts , when a driver facing a ban is reliant on it for a living / caring for someone , does depend on circs but in this case it’s more about the damage to the image of racing , i’m sure he’s not the first careless person or the last , it does give an insight into the relationships between animals whose usefulness has gone and the people who’s care they have been entrusted .
Big yards like his , are almost factory scale , the loss of one horse among 200 is not going to be noticed for long , whereas in a small and more personal yard , it will be very different .
There is obviously a culture among ( males) some who work in the industry that is unhealthy for all , the fact that a yard is a self contained world can lead to bullying and other abuse , those on the receiving end usually just move on , we only hear anecdotes after they’ve left .
Elliot will be finished as a major force in the industry , he won’t need to claim benefits though, and will no doubt re surface in another role , all this will be forgotten by most punters etc , the industry rolls on .....
